Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One game pricing up to publishers, Phil Spencer says

Polygon

Microsoft won't set the price for Xbox One games and will leave the price point of next-gen games up to publishers, Microsoft Studios' corporate vice president Phil Spencer told Polygon today.

When asked about how games might be priced on the newly announced Xbox One console, Spencer said that's not up to Microsoft.

"As a console holder, we don't actually set pricing," Spencer said. "We actually don't even recommend pricing. Honestly, we don't. Pricing is a publisher-consumer-retailer proposition, something we enable [in] a marketplace for digital content and retail. We'll price our first-party games."

When asked about prices for games published by Microsoft, he declined to be specific.

"We're not announcing the pricing of our first-party games here, but we'll be market competitive with the games we're releasing," he said.

Was it up to Microsoft with the 360?

why hasn't anyone from MS silenced this man?

Here's hoping no publisher decides to get greedy. Though with Sonys $59.99 limit. I don't think we'll see much of an issue here.

Wait don't publishers already set the price on other consoles? Seems redundant.

SE and 39.99 TWEWY comes to mind.

This isn't the Phil you're looking for.

So what if EA decides to push forth $69.99 price tag for their games >.>?

Then there are two possibilities:

A - An insufficient amount of people buy the game, forcing EA to lower the price.

B - A sufficient amount of people buy the game and the price stays the same, meaning enough consumers are happy with EA's practices. If that's the case, who are we to say EA is wrong.

This is a good move. Publishers are going to react to the market to determine pricing, which gives more power to consumers.

r.i.p. console game multiplats + my wallet.

Publishers dictate price without the influence of middlemen in selling plenty of other products. I'm not sure why that would be a problem here.
