Forums - Gaming - How do people play mmo's for so long?

So I was just starting up vindictus, an mmo up again after maybe a half year. I started playing it for like half an hour and just couldn't get into it anymore. This happens with all mmo's I play. I usually play for a couple months then just get bored of it. My question to you mmo players, is how does it keep your attention for so long? I'm mainly talking to the wow players, or subscription based. The mmo's I play are free too so I can't even imagine paying monthly for a game. I would never pay monthly to play an mmo personally.

They're addicting and fun timesinks that also allow people to escape the real world and project themselves in one they gain more satisfaction out of.

People find that playing and investing a lot into those worlds is really fun, socializing with others in those games is really fun, and the gameplay is fun.

Obviously all gamers have different tastes, so not everyone loves to play MMOs.

It's about the people.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Because they tend to have what Jonathan Blow calls unethical game design that feeds into certain people's addictive personalities.

I play them cause the fun I get when playing with friends. Plus, you can basically play pretend with them. Creating a creature or hero version of yourself. Or something more provacative.

Ya I get that, but do you actively play if for years and not get bored?

I agree with this post. I'm a lone wolf type of player and playing those type of games, your forced 2 team up. Just not my type of genre.
