Nintendo Direct is great if you take it for what it is: a more personal presentation of upcoming games with a surprise thrown in now and then.

This. I also think that the Sonic announcement is only one of a few announcements like that we'll get in the next ND. I mean, they could have picked any announcement just to give us one but they felt like this (fairly big imo) partnership would be fine to show in a Direct that was supposed to be about things we knew about already. I honestly would expect to see this kind of an announcement in a more major ND such as the E3 one. Makes me wonder what else they have up their sleeves.
I enjoy the ND's quite a bit. Iwata's grasp of English is pretty funny sometimes..."See you around that time of E3!" lol. He isn't afraid to be a bit goofy which is an extremely refreshing change of pace since he is the President and CEO of a major company. Trinen always struck me as a bit creepy to be honest, but this new guy was a little weird too.
I feel like the Sonic announcement should have come at the end just before Reggie spoke so it would have ended on 2 megatons, but oh well, not a big deal. Speaking of which, I really hope theres a Best Buy near me that has the demos....or they make them available on the eShop for people that already have a Wii U and aren't near one of the 100 stores. That would be extremely epic.
On the topic of Nintendo stealing the thunder of media sites.....they absolutely are, and I am perfectly fine with it to be honest. If the writers aren't creative enough to throw in a little speculation instead of basically giving a press release, that's their problem. Nintendo is extremely good at keeping secrets, and they aim to keep it that way. They control the flow of information so that nothing gets leaked ahead of time. They also don't let media sites use clips of ND's.....even though they try to circumvent it anyway. They could easily just embed the youtube link and any ad revenue would go to Nintendo.....instead they all want to use their proprietary video players. But I'm getting off topic....
