Forums - Sales Discussion - Great Business Move by Sony

In a surprising move, the German arm of Sony has decided to give you credit on purchasing a Blu-ray player by bringing in your HD DVD player.

In what almost seems like some form of exchange of prisoners of war, Sony has teamed up with a Saturn, a major electronics retailer in Germany, to help HD DVD fans make the switch to Blu-ray.

The advertisement (picture below, in German, credit to Blu-ray.com) says that if you bring in an HD DVD player, they will give you a credit of €150 on the Sony BDP-S300. This unit normally retails for €499 (approx $737.65), so the exchange would lower it to €349 (approx $515.91). While still not the cheapest solution in the world for a format exchange, at least it would get what many view as a “dead player” out of your home.

The odds of this happening in the United States seems fairly slim. The USA had the highest adoption rate of HD DVD, so it would cost Sony considerably more to try to carry off a similar deal here. As someone who chose HD DVD in the format war, I would love to see this offer come to the states, but I’m not exactly hopeful of that happening.

No matter if you like Sony or not, that is clever

Good way to convert people definitely. I don't expect Sony US to do the same though because of all the ridiculous fire sales on HD-DVD players.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

What is the cheapest HD-DVD player selling for in Europe now? it would be funny if its selling for less than €150, easy discount on a new blu-ray player.

Edit. oops, i looked and couldn't see another thread (let this one die quietly)

Clever move. Might get a few more Blu-Ray users while taking down the number HD-DVD users at the same time.
