Forums - Sony - You can play The Last of Us while it is still downloading

Taking cues from one of the PlayStation 4′s key new features, Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us will be playable as it downloads, should you opt for the (no doubt massive) digital version.

Speaking to GI, Naughty Dog said that when the game releases in the middle of June, you’ll be able to start playing it when the game gets to about 50% downloaded.

We’d suspect this isn’t nearly the same tech that the PS4 uses, and that there’ll be an initial download and install followed by the rest of the game which simply downloads in the background.

Regardless, this is to celebrated. The two level demo is huge, so we can only imagine how big the full game will be – the option to start before it’s all downloaded is great.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

good but for those who will buy the game day 1, preloading the whole game before release is the better alternative. and everyone should buy it day 1!

PS4? Aww... Didn't we know this already? Still very impressive though on a console, pc's have been doing it for what? A decade? Maybe a tad more... I was hoping it was a thread about the ps3!

Still impressive though... Sorry...

it only does everything.

It's nice to see this "tech" also on ps3 but iirc with ps4 you can play "directly" while here you have to downoad 50% of the game.
To ps3-owners: do ps3-games have to be "installed" after downloading or are they directly playable after download has finished?

Thoughtful of them.

Well then I think ND found a solution to "half install while downloading", probably together with Sony. If this feature is available only with a new system-software, I wouldn't be surprised. Still amazing and gives gamers a view of what will be able to do with PS4.

install first. Wonder if there will be no need for it here?

I am wondering why it was needed at all. Don't want to start a war but on 360 you could always start right off. As I said in another post, perhaps Sony will release a new system-software to make this available to all future download-games.

The Last of Us is on PS3 o.O

Where can you play PC games while downloading? I always have to finish my downloads first

Yes. http://www.thelastofus.com/

Holy crap, you actually got me there. At first, I was a solid "YES", that quickly changed too, "but, if he didn't know how would I?) You made me look up the link to self-confirm it. Kudos sir.

WoW has been doing it for as long as it's been around. As far as I know anyway. That and Diablo III are the only ones I know of but I assumed they'd be tonnes more.
