why just not let drive club release in march 2014? or summer 2014? that way they would have a game that would boost sales after the system launches. it would also help avoid a dry spell
Year of the PS triple. They did launch GT4 towards the end of PS2's life. So it could happen again but i am skeptical.

GT3 is the best selling entry because.....wait for it........mass bundling. |
True but that was mainly just in America. On a regular go, GT seems to only be able to penetrate around 4 million in the US territory
That bundling almost got GT3 to around 7 mill in America

$199 PS3 with GT6 would indeed obliterate the competition, that competition that includes the PS4.

Now they have PS3 and PS4 competing against each other instead. Which is better for Sony and PS4's future? |
That is not new. They had that on every new console they released. Also, Sony needs money, and this will give them good money.

Sony is more about making profit than winning the first 3 months of sales race. And from the finnancial standpoint, GT6 on PS3 makes more sense. Smaller development cost ( I assume ) on a profitable console with bigger userbase where the game itself would sell better. I also dont think Sony would really mind one of their own consoles is outselling the other

^^ This is the problem with companies not revealing their software plans early. People think you can make a new game within a year. It takes at least 2 years to make a new game (and this is with an established engine and assets already). This decision was made probably earlier than that knowing how long Poliphony digital takes to develop their GT's. You cant just up and say "lets make it for the next console!" and just waste years of work starting over. That is a huge loss for the company wich had basically been paid to do nothing of note for that time. This isnt past gen. Games are more complex and costly to develop for. You cant just swap the platform half way through.
Also, i doubt even Sony internally knew when they were going to release the platform. Imagine making this decision two years ago. Would you really have agreed to make it for the PS4 when they could just re-use assets from GT5 to make GT6 faster? If we didnt get GT6 now, chances are it wouldnt be ready for another 2 years at least. You know how PD is...

It wont sell like the PS2 unless its launched at $299 and recieves 2 exclusive blockbusters in its 1st holiday(Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto).
That will be pretty hard to top dont you think?

I actually remember the launch line-up of the PS2 beeing quite poor. Tekken Tag and Ridge racer were the best games on that lin-up wich speaks for itself. I never really understood the PS2 launch. It was pretty bad, but people were badly craving next gen after denying themselves the joy that was the dreamcast for some unkown reason. I never really got that. GT might have had a role in it, but back then they didnt have a competing franchise like Drive Club.
Lets face it, if both games were released early in the PS4 life, drive club would certainly fail because people would just wait for GT.
By the way, GT3 only launch in the summer and the PS2 launched in the year before. They only had GT for its second holidays. It wasnt GT that did it, it was something misterious because the system sold like a beast since the start. People were just craving an evolution of the goodness that was the PS1. Unfortunely it never deliverd if you ask me.
