Comg isnt really representative of switch's software sales and Smash will be bigger in the West anyway.

I was thinking this regarding Pokemon. Isn't it like 99% of Switch games, open way way higher FW than COMG suggests.

Honestly I think the biggest thing COMG pre-orders can't represent for how well a game does overall in software sales is legs. I mean a bunch of Switch games haven't dropped out of the media create charts since they were originally released, while most titles on any other platform in Japan stay in the charts a few weeks at best.

Even if Let's Go doesn't have the biggest opening ever, it could be over a year before it stops selling well.

I don't see Pokemon Let's Go passing Smash, but I don't really get why people want it to flop. Maybe its just me, but I think it's a good opportunity to bring in not only children, but adults who once played Pokemon (whether it be Gen I or II) but stopped for one reason or another. Pokemon Go has shown that there are fans who want to get involved in the series. Why have mainline games from recent generations not been able to reach the 20 million mark despite having big install bases (outside of almost having annual installments)? Maybe this can help add in an audience that previous generations have not been able to do. Whether it will work or not, time will tell. Still, I am pretty excited to try these games out as a long-time Pokemon fan.

A remake the way that they have been remaking titles would have done exactly what you want. Instead, they gave us Pokemon Let's go.

The remakes in the past, however, haven't really done much to expand the audience. Sales have been great, but have not translated to even close to Gen I and II when the mania was at its peak. I think Game Freak has done the R&D that led to Let's Go to seek the audience that has played in the past but no longer played Pokémon until Go happened.

The market Nintendo is targetting for Let's Go are not the same people who preorder games 2 months from release.

Smash is back to sucking. It'll pass Smash 4 Wii U, and every Switch title except Splatoon, but I'm beginning to doubt it will break any records. I'm a bit surprised to see another 3DS game on here. I guess it would be weird if PQ2 didn't chart at all, but still. I wonder if Vita has any more games that will chart? Cart printing isn't discontinued in Japan yet if I recall.

True, I certainly don't think it'll flop or anything, even in Japan, but while COMG isn't representative of Switch in the larger market, any one game is representative of COMG's audience relative to itself within its place in the larger market, so comparing COMG performance of one game to another, while not a one-to-one comparison due to a shrinking physical games market and their shrinking number of stores, still counts for something, and can give you an idea of where the whole market is trending, even if it doesn't give you a precise ratio to weekly nationwide sales. If Smash is lagging behind its predecessors performances, that's a bad sign. Heck, it might end up lagging behind Splatoon 2's performance, which is more recent and on a smaller userbase of the same console, so it's more comparable but should show a positive trend. We really need it to beat Splatoon 2 if we expect to see it do especially well overall. Ultimate really has to knock it out of the park, it's mostly carrying the system in December.

But yeah, I don't think this means anything for the West. Smash looks on track in US preorders to sell comparable to RDR2 in the states, so I'm not worried about Western sales. I wouldn't necessarily say it'll be bigger in the West though, as Japan made up a sizable portion of Smash 4 sales, more than Europe actually.

So trailing behind last year's entry a bit but far in front of the other CoDs

Made 4 points today just to prove you wrong.

Seriously, we're still over 3 months from release, Smash will pick up the pace over the coming weeks. I really don't see it not beat Splatoon, I think it's more in line of the 1300 points of Monster Hunter XX on 3DS

Yeah, this is definitely what we need to see more regularly if it's going to beat any records. I originally thought it was a sure bet to beat Smash 4 3DS and Wii U combined, but the dead momentum as of late got me down.
