Wow Mario games don't seem to get many pre-orders at all, are they not big in Japan?

3D Mario is not really all that popular in Japan. 2D Mario is a different story. When NSMBWii came out over there it outsold Mario Galaxy in like two weeks if I remeber correctly.

OK I understand, I thought what I and a lot of people consider the most popular icon of gaming would be bigger in his own turf aka japan, but it appears not.

Its not yokai or pokomon or final fantasy etc huge [the A franchises] its the next level down [a B franchise] still it can pull off some good numbers, perhaps even 400k to  a million

Now you are just underestimating Mario. 2D mario can sell Pokemon levels if done right.  The 7th generation 2D marios sold close to 5 million each I believe over there. in Japan.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

If Odyssey breaks 2 mil like 3D Land, will it be fair to say 3D Mario is bigger than FF in Japan?

FF 15 barely got to one million in Japan. I would say 3D Mario is already bigger.

3D Land is hardly a 3D Mario game...It's a 3D platformer with 2D design. And on a handheld device. In Japan. There's no comparison with Final Fantasy possible here lol

It's tough to compare them directly because they aren't on the same platform. But if SE insists on keeping FF exclusive to home consoles they are limiting its sales potential in Japan. Not saying XV should have been on 3DS, just that I wouldn't hesitate to say that Pokemon is bigger than FF.

That probably still sounds weird. I'm not port begging for FF on Nintendo platforms. I'm saying using the more limited sales potential of the platform as an excuse for consistently lower sales basically speaks for itself. It doesn't seem to be holding Dragon Quest back in any case.

Like, to believe FF is more popular than 3D Mario in Japan we ought to believe that a hypothetical major FF game released on 3DS would have outsold 3D Land. But there is no such game, and never will be. If sales are the metric for popularity, how can we claim FF is more popular? How does pointing out that it released on less popular hardware somehow increase its perceived popularity?

I didn't really want to start a Mario vs FF war, I only brought it up because GProgrammer said FF is in a higher tier of sellers in Japan than 3D Mario when if anything the opposite is true (but I would probably count them both as B+ or A tier).

Sales of the 3D Marios in Japan:

1996 - Super Mario 64 - 1,646,558

2002 - Super Mario Sunshine - 789,989

2004 - Super Mario 64 DS - 1,231,891

2007 - Super Mario Galaxy - 1,025,664

2010 - Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 1,046,696

2011 - Super Mario 3D Land - 2,111,490

2013 - Super Mario 3D World - 742,024

I think Mario Odyssey will pass 1 million sales and will outsell FFXV. 3D World flopped (in comparison to the other games) because it is on the Wii U.

I'm surprised that Mario Galaxy 2 sold as much as Mario Galaxy 1, I wish it had been the same in the rest of the world.

Edit: I changed the 3D World number to the more updated one.

there's not a single PS4 game that has even come close. Looks like there aren't even any PS3 games over 2 million.

Japan loves Nintendo and portable gaming in general. No doubt about that.

However, I'm not sure you're right about Final Fantasy XII (PS3) not selling 2 million in Japan. Less than a month after its release (January 10th 2010) it had sold through (to customers) 1.844m copies on PS3 alone (just 156,000 shy of 2m).

Here we are, 7 years and 8 months later and I think it's pretty safe to assume that the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII has crossed the 2m mark. If someone here has access to the Media Create archives on Neogaf, we'd probably be able to find exactly when it crossed the mark.

On PS4 you have a point even though one could argue that PS4's top sellers aren't that far from 3D Mario games averaging 1.2m per game and the latest (3D World) selling 0.7m. We have Dragon Quest XI (PS4) at 1.34m but while its digital sales have been confirmed to be strong (digital made it sell "stronger" than the 3DS version at launch), I think it'll have a hard time reaching 2 million in Japan alone. Maybe Monster Hunter World will be up for the task?

I see what you're coming from but Final Fantasy XV (PS4) got to 1 million (sold through to customers) in Japan 8 months ago.

I think Super Mario Odyssey could very well outsell FFXV but let's not make it seem even more dire for the state of home consoles in Japan than it actually is.

Super Mario 3d world has sold 742k.
133./089. [WIU] Super Mario 3D World (Nintendo) {2013.11.21} (¥5.700) - 53.487 / 742.024 (-35%) (99.588 <57,17%>) I'm fed up with seeing everytime that outdated 600k figure , including digital it must have outsold sunshine with gc having sold 700k more units than wii u.

Hence SMS is the worst selling 3D Mario in Japan... Deservedly!
