Guys, I think Monster Hunter may really be seeing a decline in Japan ...

Monster Hunter 3 (PSP) - 4.87M (2010)
Monster Hunter 4 (3DS) - 3.44M (2013)
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (3DS) - 2.63M (2014)
Monster Hunter X (3DS) - 2.81M (2015)
Monster Hunter XX (3DS) - ~1.6M (2017)

Now while Monster Hunter XX for the Switch is just a late port of an enhanced rerelease but Monster Hunter Tri for the 3DS which was just a port of Monster Hunter Tri from the WII with content additions was ACTUALLY able to outsell it's original release by almost twice as much!

Monster Hunter Tri (WII) - 1.05M (2009)
Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate (3DS) - 1.96M (2011)

Now while the 3DS experienced two enhanced rereleases there was a sharper drop off between MHX and MHXX (a deficit of ~1.2M) compared to MH4 and MH4U (a deficit of ~0.8M) in addition to the falloff from the first entries ... (MH4/MHX with a deficit ~0.6M)

All of this could mean that the next portable entry may sell at least 1M units less in Japan compared to the last portable entry assuming constant decline but so far it's too soon to tell ...

The next most important test for the franchise is going to be Monster Hunter World and if that doesn't sell at least 500K in Japan (which is already a dire number as it is considering MH Tri for the WII was able to hit over a million copies), Capcom may well permanently put a lid on the franchise or give it one more chance on the Switch (with a minimum target of a million copies) ...

If all of that comes to pass then this doesn't bode well for the Switch to be able to depend on two declining franchises (MH & YW) to reliably drive massive hardware sales anymore ...

Now while we may be just seeing a fluke with MHXX for the Switch since it's just a regular port of an enhanced rerelease (that should arguably be doing the absolute minimum considering that there's very little 3rd party software competition so far on the Switch) however I can't help but point out that a significant reason for why it is performing so poorly is because the franchise is progressively getting weaker ...

It looks like DQ3DS is going to top the charts again! I wonder if Switch can keep up its #1 spot?

Do you really need to be told about the difference in MH sales between home and portable consoles by this point?  Seriously?

Even for you, you should know this by now.

But everyone knew this. Combination of series losing its luster and more competition for this type of game.

Open your eyes, expand your horizons outside of VgChartz' unreliable numbers:

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/finance/million.html

Hint hint: Monster Hunter 4 was released exclusively in Japan. Sold over 4 million copies and then Ultimate 4 sold around 3 million copies in Japan... The following year.

Hint hint: XX is getting an HD port literally 5 months after the release of the enhanced version, which sits at over 1.7 million without digital downloads and would surely reach 2 million if the Switch version didn't exist. It still might.

Vgchartz's japanese numbers ARE reliable since their source is media create ... (Capcom's numbers also take into factor digital sales as well so that can explain some discrepancy)

Also what you posted doesn't change my point. Monster Hunter is declining in Japan even according to Capcom's own numbers ...
