Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U "roughly" 500 gflops confirmed?

I did a little searching and noticed that Nintendo hasn't really confirmed any specs, at all. A hacker named @marcan42 on twitter confirmed the specs: CPU @ 1.24 Ghz and GPU@ 550 Mhz, he also states "roughly" 500 gflops.

It seems that most people absolutely take his word on the 1.24 Ghz CPU, but seem to doubt the "roughly" 500 gflops he claims. I find that a bit hypocritical, he's either reliable and credible, or he's not. In fact, I have noticed a few members absolutely disagree with the 500 gflops even going on to say that the Wii U is extremely weak and can't compete with the likes of PS3 and XBOX360. Making it seem they only agree with 1.24 Ghz because it fits right into their Wii U sucks agenda.

I happen to agree with @marcan42, I believe he was correct with the 1.24Ghz and his analysis of the GPU is most likely correct or very close.

So my question is, if you agree with the 1.24 Ghz, and do not agree with the 500 gflops, why?

The Wii U is more powerful than the PS3.

This isn't open to debate, this is a fact.

i'm not a tech genius, how does 500 giga flops compare to 360/ps 3 and what does it even do? lol

Wii U is more powerful than PS360... everybody knows that.

In any case the Wii U GPU is weak compared to what we will see in the next-gen.

PS360 have a ~250 GLOPS GPU... the Wii U have a 350-500 GLOPS.

flops, glops, idk

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

Well I had a look at his twitter and didn't see anything about 500 gflops. He did say he doesn't know anything about GPU power though.

Also I would probably think most people are going by the NeoGAF breakdown of the Wii U, where it says there would be a maximum of 352 gflops, going by the best possible specs it could have based on what they have uncovered.

Here is the CPU as well

Well, if not I'm not mistaken the PS3 and 360 can do 220-240 Gflops, if that helps any.

PS360 have a ~250 GLOPS GPU... the Wii U have a 400-500 GLOPS.

It's technically less than even that.  Really no one truly knows, but on neogaf they speculate a core config of 160:8:4, which you don't see above 240 gflops.  However, the thing has a lot of transistors, over 700 mil, so there is some nintendo fixed function TEV magic going on as well.  Hence, the criterion guys saying how at first look you can dismiss the HW but once you look at strengths, find out Wii U "punches above its weight".  So it may actually perform to a gpu that ghas over 400 gflops.  Its still a big mystery.

But in the end, it doesn't really matter, U is only slightly above PS360 in terms of visual evidence,  so its nothing more than a continuanceslight evolution/ of that gen.  The only way Nintendo will make powerful HW again, is if one of MS or Sony leave the console market, where 3rd party becomes viable again.  Remember GC was arguably the most powerful (actual performance, efficiency wise) yet it was the most shunned from PS2/Xbox.  "Never again" said Ninty after the shame of GC.  I personally am hoping MS bullies Sony out of the market (might as well root for the American)  so Nintendo can be relevent again.  Until that time, Nintendo is nothing more than a Miyamoto box, and if it wants to succeed, needs to drastically slash its price to $250 and lower.
