Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony forecast only 5 million Vita and PSP unit sales in FY14

VG247

While Sony’s fiscal year 2013 results paint a positive picture of the PlayStation 3 holding out and performing well as the company waits for the next generation, their handheld division is having less luck.

Sony has offered a forecast of 5 million units sold for their handheld gaming division in the 2014 fiscal year – a number that includes both Vita and PSP sales. The two machines managed to move 7 million units this fiscal year.

For comparison’s sake, Nintendo estimated it would sell 18 million 3DS consoles in fiscal year 2014. Sony’s Vita numbers are surprisingly low, and seem to indicate an expectation that Vita sales will remain largely flat while Japanese sales of the PSP continue to taper as the machine nears the end of its life.

PS3 and PS2 are expected to move 10 million in the same period, impacted by the launch of the PS4. Numbered predictions were not offered for Sony’s incoming next-generation offering, but the company did say it was expecting sales to “increase significantly” with the launch of the machine.

Yeah, the Vita is really dead in the water. It will be Sonys last handheld.

MY GOD, you should be mass reported for the obvious trolling you're doing.

On topic, it's clear Sony isn't planning any price drops for the Vita in the west. They probably prefer lower sales rather than makes losses.

That is...low. C'mon Sony, you can do better than that.

I agree, they will probably sell the console with a 32GB card to try to make it more attractive.

But one has to wonder, if they prefer low sales before losing money, what will they do with the PS4?

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

How is it trolling?

Can you name a mainstream console that sold less than the Vita? Do you really think Sony will do another one?

The Vita is not a mainstream console and not every console has sold like the PSX, PS2, DS right out of the gate. Sony will not abandon the foothold they have gotten in the handheld market. So yes, they will support the Vita and will release a succesor in a couple of years.

Well that pretty much confirms no Western price drop or a massive push for the Vita, then.

But c'mon Sony! Even I think that's crazy low!

Also, I see this thread getting quite nasty quite soon. Hopefully I'm wrong though...

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

At least they're being realistic for once.
