Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo relation with the West is not as bad as Microsoft with Japan

Is Japan "irrelevant"?

7th-Gen Console Sales:

As a market, Japan is less relevant than either America or Europe, or the sum of other territories displayed as "Rest of World" on VGChartz.

"Oh, but Japan is more interested in handhelds, that's where they're truly relevant."

7th-Gen Handheld Console Sales:

Still a smaller cut of the pie than America or Europe. Not irrelevant, but certainly less relevant.

If you look at the title of this discussion, you will realize we are talking about the relevance the Japanese market could have to Microsoft. So:

1 - Once Microsoft is not in the handheld business, I don't think your 2nd graphic is relevant at all.

2 - Once Microsoft doesn't make profit on hardware but on software, I believe your 1st graphic is not the best way to show the relevance of each market. If you do it based on software sales, Japan would have a relevance of 6,45% instead of 9%.

3 - Once Microsoft is a Western company and the Japanese almost don't buy Western products, I suggest for you to see the % in average of the Japanese sales regarding a Western game (I speculate that pretty much shows what X360 could have got in Japan). Then instead of 6,45% it would be less than 4%.

So, in my opinion, 4% is the relevance of the Japanese market regarding what we are discussing here. And I would call it NOT RELEVANT.

Microsoft has always been biggest in their own back yard for obvious reasons. Problem is in the long term it will be to America's detriment to be tied to this conglomorate like it is. Besides being one of the worlds biggest proxy patent trolls along with Apple their time will come

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

People have said that for 20 years, nice wishful thinking.
