Forums - Sales Discussion - Which will sell more: COD Ghosts vs GTA V

Which game will sell more

Call of Duty: Ghosts 110 24.28%

Grand Theft Auto V 280 61.81%

See the results 61 13.47%

Total:451

1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas 2004 Action Take-Two Interactive 9.43 8.48 0.41 2.49 20.81
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 2011 Shooter Activision 9.25 4.11 0.12 1.43 14.91

this isn't a fair comparison. You are comparing San Andreas on the PS2 a console with a 150 million install base. You should be comparing MW3 on both the PS3 and XBOX vs GTA San Andreas on PS2. In that case MW3 dominates GTA.

Most likely COD, unfortunately.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

GTA V because it will be around for like 4/5 years before a new one and COD ghosts looks bad and will only really sell for around a year

COD gas had some major competition

Yeah, I don't think it outsold Taco Bell tacos in any of those years.

LOL @ Battlefield 3. EA hyped the shiznit out of that game yet it barely made a ding. Halo had a much closer battle, but even then COD won by a large margin.

I'm not sure what to think outside of COD winning. I'm skeptical that COD has peaked with MW3, I think sales can still be greater by a few million.

It's just that simple.

You wanna bet?

"27.5 million copies sold worldwide." Vgchartz largely undertracked the game, Rockstar confirmed that it's sold 27.5 million copies and that's before factoring in the digital sales. So comparing MW3 with it, I think they're evenly matched at the moment, but CoD will surpass it, and that's just a fact.

However with the decline shown by Black Ops II and the increase in hype for GTA V over GTA IV, I think GTA V will outsell it easily. Problem with GTA IV was that they released the game on the HD twins with minimal install bases, which was like 40M or some shit. When most people finally bought the HD twins they simply bought the game used over new to save money(like I did.) I think the fact that the HD twins now have an install base rivaling the PS2's that this game will sell around 30 Million copies or more between the two.

GTA V is going to dominate COD this time.

Microsoft Xbox 360 units sold, June 2008: 20m

Sony PS3 units sold, June 2008: ~14m

GTA IV, April 2008, 1-day and 5-day sales : 310m, 500m

Microsoft Xbox 360 units sold, February 2013: 76m

Sony PS3 units sold, February 2013: 77m

Black Ops 2, November 2012, 1-day and 5-day sales: $500m, n/a (Probably below 775m, MW3's 5-day numbers, as Activision withheld 5-day sales numbers for BO2)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see from those stats alone Black Ops 2 obviously wiped the floor with GTA IV's sales numbers but it's extremely important to look at the release date of both games. When comparing the total 360s and PS3s in circulation in April 2008 and Febuary 2013 you get a perspective of just how amazing GTA IV did sales wise. It's also important to note how CoD: Ghosts is not expected to do as well as Black Ops 2 by sales numbers not only because Black Ops 2 5-day sales apparently fell short of Modern Warfare 3's (hinting at a possible CoD decline), but also because of "a challenged global economy" and "the ongoing console transition", according to what Activision's own Publisher CEO Eric Hirshberg told investors at an investor meeting.

If you take how well GTA IV did with  just 34m consoles in circulation by June 2008 (so a little less in late April 2008) and balance that number as if there were 153m consoles sold like in Feb. 2013 (so a little less in Nov. 2012) you'd be seeing numbers 5x higher. Obviously this doesn't mean GTA V will do 5x better than GTA IV sales but again, it puts things into perspective.

If there was ever a time to land a clean right hook on the Call of Duty Franchise, it's Q4 2013, and Rockstar Games is poised to do so this fall with the release of GTA V just 14 days before Q4 begins.

(i created an account because I find this all extremely fascinating)

I'm going to go with GTA V. We don't get these ever year, there will be a lot of pent up demand for the release of a new GTA game.

Although Black Ops 2 had monstrous sales, it still had a SIGNIFICANT 20% decline in sales compared to Modern Warfare 3. I think COD Ghosts will have another 20-30% decline in sales from Black Ops 2
