What are you planning to do with history? I'd argue that's one of the worst things to study UNLESS you want to teach.

perhaps he likes it? doint it for fun? is generally interested in it? that should be the main purpose of studying.

Totally disagree. Ideally you want to do something you enjoy, but realistically you need to prepare for your future. History doesn't exactly open many doors for you is my point.

I don't have enough knowledge to judge about other fuelds of study besides "natural science" but I doubt that history won't give you much choices later to get a job. Usually you specialize in a certain topic and profs will give you hints where to get a job later.

Yay! Congratulations!

First year of Journalism here. Albeit it's a pretty horrible career right now, and let's say where I do live things aren't...particulary well-done (We don't even have equipment for recording -_- ), but yeah, this is what I want to do, right now. I don't know what my goal will be; I was planning after finishing it to do a designing course and then try the world of videogaming scriptwriting.

Not when it's £27,000 tuition plus near-London living expenses plus three years of your life not spent doing something towards your career.

Why should someone study anything he doesn't like? Especially if it is that expansive. What if after graduation you realize that you won't like the jobs you will get with your education? Perhaps it's not really "fun" but studying something you are not interested in makes no sense to me.

Because of my grades i was quite limited to what universities i could pick. I'm on B's and C's and due to the huge grade inflation recently that meant the University of Essex was sort of an aspirational choice for me (Plymouth University is my insurance choice). The amount of universities that want an A now is just rediculous! and i actually visited there and i loved it. The environment was perfect for me (i love the greenery), everyone is very helpful and welcoming. There is a huge range of topics in history that you can pick and huge flexibility here (i can do a joint degree if i wanted despite applying for a single degree) and there is a lot around. And the accomodation is cheap and very good (starts at £70 a week and goes up to £115 a week)

And to be honest i have no idea what job i want to do, still! all i know is love history and that's that (always have). i just hope the economy is fixed by 2017, so i can get a job. I mean right now, people are graduating and can't a job or are underemployed, it's quite bad. But at least, university will give me something to do for at least 3 years, that's how i see it right now. Better than being unemployed.

A girl at my university doing History (and this is supposed to be the joint hardest university in the country right?) said to me that all lectures are optional and in fact there's no exams until the end of the third year, so she could spend the first 2.5 years just reading books when she felt like it. Then she'll get a 2.1, because everyone in History gets a 2.1 regardless. I don't see how that's preparing you for a job?

Yes that's why i'm doing it, i just love history. I couldn't care about the debt to be honest. I don't plan on getting a credit card, overdraft, mortgage (well maybe mortgage eventually) etc. So who gives a fuck? and even though, i don't know what job i want. I would rather learn something i enjoy now. Then struggle to find a job. I don't want to leave sixth form and go straight into unemployment, i'd hate that. I know i would.

Well, naturally the jobs available right now are those that people don't "like" doing. You've got to accept that your job is not your choice and you get free time outside of work hours to do those likes.

I did Physics, which I "liked", but there's no jobs and I wish I'd done something I was good at but hated like Engineering.

What university is this? you never said where you go. and what's to say History degrees are like that everywhere?

Student loans don't affect your credit score.

Just work hard and enjoy yourself. Worry about getting a job later! No point in studying something with a 100% employment rate if you were going to be miserable doing it.

Perhaps my point of view is different because in Germany the situation is a little bit different (at least it was): We have two competing ways of studying: One is university and one is called "fachhochschule" which I don't know how to translate properly.

The difference is (was): University was for people to achieve theoretical knowledge mostly. The whole process of studying was of course to get knowledge but you also learned "for life". To get self-organized, to get the possibility to ask the right questions, to question "given" things and so on. "fachhochschule" meant "we tell you what you have to know in exams. nothing more nothing less" and was targetted at preparing the studends to "function" when they get a job. This was never intended at universities. Sadly this changed with bologna process and the introduction of bachelor/master also in universities.

I wish everyone else had common sense like you do :)
