One of Sony’s major advantages over Microsoft last gen has been the fact that its membership network has been free to play. Without a Gold Membership, there is actually very little you can do with an XBOX Live account. You can keep a friends list, and send them messages, but you can’t actually play with them online.
Sony’s Playstation Network has always allowed for friends list messaging, and online play has always been free. They do offer a paid service, called Playstation Plus. On first glance, it might not seem worth the $50 yearly fee, considering you already get online play for free. However, you have to take into consideration these things:
- There are always 12 full version PS3 games and 6 Vita games available at any time as part of the “Instant Game Collection” service. As long as you are a member, you essentially “own” these games, or at least the right to play them.
- New games get added, and old games are removed each month. However, the old games don’t disappear completely – if you were a member when they were available, you can still play that game as long as you are still a member.
- Even if you cancel your account and come back, you will regain access to all the games you enabled.
As you can guess, with new games being added each month, you can build quite a collection. A member on reddit has put together a list of the games you would have access too, if you were a PSPlus member for the last year. Here it is:

Wish they did a list for EU PS Plus. That would be even more impressive.
