I like TheLastStarfighter's explanation but I'm not sure I believe it 100%.

Metroid certainly has an avid following, but then so does Starfox, Pikmin, and Fire Emblem and the first two at least sell similar numbers to Metroid. I guess it's that Metroid pre-dated all those franchises (and Animal Crossing, Wii, Nintendogs, and everything else that vastly outsells it). Doesn't pre-date Kirby though and Kirby also sells similar numbers and is also a completely unique universe. But for some reason Nintendo fans tend to think Kirby sucks.

Kirby games haven't been the best lately.

Return to dreamland was cool but the Kirby formula has changed less than even 2D Mario.

I've only tried that 3ds ambassador kirby game. I didn't really like it, I just flew around trying to find something to do. FE the sacred stones on the other hand...

Because they are the 3 most popular ''original'' games from Nintendo. By ''original'' I mean they started almost when everything started, with the NES. They are the 3 longest running franchise, that are all 3 totaly different style of gameplay and universe. Meanwhile DK's universe can be related to Mario's, but Zelda/Metroid/Mario has nothing in comon except with few small clever easter eggs a la Link's Awakening.

What?! I can't hear you over all this awsome! - Pyrrhon (Kid Icarus:Uprising)

Final Ultimate Legendary Earth Power Super Max Justice Future Miracle Dream Beautiful Galaxy Big Bang Little Bang Sunrise Starlight Infinite Fabulous Totally Final Wonderful Arrow...FIRE! - Wonder-Red (The Wonderful101)

Metroid Prime is the only Metroid game that's sold well - it's the metroid curse. That being said, Mario, Metroid, and Zelda are the big three core franchises Nintendo has - Kirby is on the softcore side of the spectrum and Fire Emblem is on the hardcore side. Mario, Metroid, and Zelda sit comfortably in the middle.

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

I think its because they are so different from each other. If we were counting popularity it would be Mario Pokemon Zelda

As I said, I think there are more hardcore Pokemon fans than there are Metroid fans.

It's not about sales, it's about those three franchises representing the pinnacle of Nintendo's classic game design that appeals to the hardcore fanbase.

Anyone talking about sales is completely missing the point.

The Screamapillar is easily identified by its constant screaming—it even screams in its sleep. The Screamapillar is the favorite food of everything, is sexually attracted to fire, and needs constant reassurance or it will die.

Different from each other? Is pokemon similar to mario then? Is animal crossing similar to zelda? It might be because Metroid was made to be a mix of Mario and Zelda though. But there still are plenty of others more worthy of the place (I consider the big three to be a mix between sales and quality, therefore mario, zelda and pokemon)

Its about recognition to "Nintendo" and the console space, not sales.
