Forums - Gaming Discussion - Random Thought: If Call of Duty never existed how would the gaming industry look today?

If you do not like Call of Duty then so be it.  But millions upon millions of others love the series and nothing you all say about it will change that.  Hating on something that is popular does not make you different and cool.  If you don't like something turn your head instead of bashing on it.

I literally did not see anyone bash COD in this thread.

OT: I'd probably have to agree with Medal of Honor or Battlefield being bigger. Thing is, I think the Kill Streaks were a big draw for COD. Maybe even Ghost Recon could have been bigger. All depends on who could have made that huge appealing FPS(Multi-Plat) earlier this gen.

It is for anybody who reads.  I know for a fact there are tons of CoD haters on this site and all across the internet.  I've never seen a game get as much hate as CoD does.

Wii Sports.

All the haters would find a different game to bash instead.

not even remotely close.  Nobody really talks about Wii Sports on the internet that much.  Every time Call of Duty gets mentioned you have people come in who wasn't interested in it in the first place saying things like "yawn another one" or things of that nature.  Then they go off and play some sequel in another genre.

better?

How about almost everything EA has published in the last decade? Yearly $60 "roster updates"(same reasoning as with the COD games) for their sports series, SimCity, Spore (at least in Germany) etc.

2D Mario also has gotten much hate lately, but I don't think it has quite reached COD dimensions^^

Go to the Ghost teaser and look at the dislike bar.  For a game that sells around 30m a year i find this kind of behavior ridiculous.  Not even gameplay and this is how internet gamers react.

It's not as if FPS wasn't a hugely popular market. MW2 really kicked it off though. It had little competition at launch, Halo3 was a few years old and ODST was the only "new: release at the time. It would have been interesting to see how things panned out if Acti stuck with their original plan to launch MW2 without the CoD moniker. Nearly happened as I recall.

Yeah, it really is sad. I personally think COD has become worse with every installment after COD4 to the point it is unbearable to play the SP campaigns, but that's my personal gripe with a specific part of the game. The thought to spew that kind of hate and downvote the teaser trailer of an unreleased game wouldn't even cross my mind...

medal of honor or battlefield would of taken their place

Medal of Honor has been lackluster this gen and Battlefield was made popular from Call of Duty.  Battlefield 3's advertising was literally the controversial of being better than call of duty.

Battlefield has always been popular but it wasnt until BF3 that it went mainstream

doesn't matter. they all fill the same fps multi player need. one of them would of. bf3 wasn't made popular by CoD, its done it on its own with a series of great games, and a great spin off series.
