Good PR move I guess.
Good PR, and a good symbolic gesture, ultimately does nothing to affect the company's bottom line.
PS4 needs to launch well. It's an important product for the market perception of Sony. Vita is a bit of a sideshow in terms of market perception as PSP was never seen as anything other than minor competition to DS.
Xperia is also a vital public perception product line. They did well with the Z, but they need to produce a series of well received phones to re-establish themselves more strongly in that market with an increasing market share. I don't much like Samsung phones, so I'd be very happy for Sony to eat into Samsung's ridiculously large Android market share. And to grab some of iPhone's market share too.
Was the Z included in these financials, or will its launch sales show up this quarter?

The Z will feature in these financials, Mobile division will still show a loss I'd imagine. I dont see this as good PR, I see it as damage limitation. Kaz really had no choice, given that he promised a return to profit (a real return to profit). Stringer did the same last year. |
Damage limitation is good PR.

In connection to the topic discussion, let me say that during the middle of the recession in the past couple of years, a number of people were angry that large bonuses were being paid to professionals whose corporations were getting taxpayer-funded bailouts. The trend was seemingly justified, as the Treasury has been found to have approved lavish executive payment.
It still impresses me how people are able to find such old threads. It must be some type of special technique.
