Forums - Gaming Discussion - When was it that gaming became synonymous with dude-bro culture?

Gaming used to have the image of nerdy guy tapping away at his computer in a basement. Or that it was primarily for kids.

Wonder when the image changed from that to the now CoD playing swog dude-broski mangs derps.

Do you really want to know? About the time Xbox arrived, actually. About the same time that various kinds of shooters became what gaming was "All about", and about the time when flash-over-substance became the development model of the gaming industry.

Basically, about the same span of time that gaming really starting becoming more "mainstream". Look at it now. Is it "better"? I'd argue not.

In fact, I'd argue that while some great games DO still come out, that gaming as a whole was MUCH better off way back when, in the 8bit and 16bit generations, and in the heyday of the arcades, not to mention back when "PC gaming" meant actual PC games, and not just console games ported to PC. It was a different world back when it was "just for nerds and kids". Why? Because back then developers didn't bother trying to make games to please everybody, or to sell billions of units. They made games they wanted to make, games that people wanted to play. Period.

The Legend of Zelda on NES.

WOAH, NICE GRAPHICS. The advert for it even had rap.

Nah...Nintendo has never created a dude bro game, unless you're talking about Rare. Killer Instinct was a dude bro game in the 90's.

I... don't really think it is.

It's now pretty much just a mainstream thing, and it's not considered in the slightest bit shameful if you admit to being a dedicated gamer. Hell, the dudebroes you describe, if they even do play games, tend to stick to the same 3-4 franchises, so saying that dudebro and gamer are synonymous is pretty ridiculous.

Dude bro's stuck to Madden like white on rice since 2001 on the PS2.

Dude bros's stuck on COD Modern Warface since 2004. LOL

You're correct too, I know plenty of dude bros and they own like 4 or 5 games tops and they are the same yearly games that douchebag companies like EA and Activision put out every year with little changes.

Sega changed the perception that gaming could be cool, but failed to take down Nintendos marketshare. The Playstation changed the public perception that gaming was for children and with competent tech and multimedia it could own the livingroom. The Xbox came and brought the massive shooter Halo and the dude bros ate it up. The dude bros evolved into monsters around the time the original Playstation came out. PS2 vs Xbox made it worse with Medal of Honor, Madden, NBA Live and now NBA2k, Madden, COD are the main dude bro games in the current gen.
