Forums - Gaming Discussion - When was it that gaming became synonymous with dude-bro culture?

Gaming used to have the image of nerdy guy tapping away at his computer in a basement. Or that it was primarily for kids.

Wonder when the image changed from that to the now CoD playing swog dude-broski mangs derps.

2006-2007 with Gears of War, COD4, and Halo 3. In other words, it's all the Xbox 360's fault. ;)

I consider people who play CoD as dorks. I also consider bros as dorks. I even consider myself as a dork but I prefer the term crazy.

I started looking into that just now and found a pretty interesting thing.

You got the sense the pre-Xbox, 'gamers as bros' was a smaller subculture within the nerdy, whimsical hobby of games. Over two console generations, a highly cynical marketing team spent billions with no hope of immediate payback to shift the market. In an act of brilliant jujitsu, Nintendo was slandered as a kids platform, their historical strength turned against them. Xbox put machismo, ultra-violence and chimpboys with backwards caps in the paid spotlight. Wedge, wedge, wedge. Gamers were handed a pre-packaged group identity via the propaganda machine of a mega corporation. For those raised post-Xbox, Microsoft was an unquestioned Mecca of modern gaming culture. Dude. They made Halo.

apprently he worked at MS.

Honestly though, the seeds were probably planted during the SNES vs Genesis days with Sega's marketing.

Wish we could change the image into something better though.

Yeah, the dudebros are the rednecks of gaming.

when the introduction of sex, violence and anything labled "cool and mature" showed up is when gaming become more of a mainstream culture among dude bros who will bash games like super mario or cartoon games because they are not considered "hardcore"

Marketing started by Sega and continued by Sony and somewhat Microsoft. Only to be abandoned by Microsoft in order to expand consumer base.

I like how some think they are way cooler because they game on a different console. This is a teenage mentality.

In Spain they're the same since the PS2 days, the difference is that now they play CoD and Assassin's Creed too, not only GTA/Fifa/PES/NFS. Here they look like this:

The 80s/90s born grew up with games as kids and as we reach adulthood its a mainstream entertainment.
