The expectations during their Nintendo days were also a lot lower. A game like Goldeneye or Banjo Kazooie isn't AAA by today's standards.

The games they did for MS platforms like Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero were high quality compared to what they did in the past, but expectations have changed so much. Kameo would have done great with a Nintendo audience, it would have even been a AAA game for the Wii. Perfect Dark Zero was lame because it wasn't at par with shooters of the time. But still technically one of the best shooters Rare ever created.

A lot of studios that made great games in the 90s have struggled to stay relevant. That's why many of them disappeared or changed to appeal to modern audiences.

I disagree... I played Goldeneye theses days ago and the gameplay is better than any recente FPS... I don't know if the N64 controller is so good for it but the fact this game yet have the same revolucionary gameplay showed more than 10 years ago makes me really happy.

Perfect Dark Zero even using the same formule is not on pair with Goldeneye.

And Donkey Kong for SNES is yet better than NSMB for Wii U... and Killer Instinct better than the latest Mortal Kombat (of course Street Fighter IV is better than all of them but that's another case because the IV is the fist in the franchise to really make me fell like the old SFII are back).

So I disagree because the old Rare games are the best yet and better than most games released today.

If you think Goldeneye is better than any recent FPS... well you're out of touch with the modern consumer. I'll leave it to that.

The Rare games that have held up the best are 2D. Donkey Kong Country being their creme de la creme. But clearly NIntendo didn't need Rare to keep Rare's most popular series going.

Anyhow, my point was Rare's games haven't gone down in quality per se. They just haven't been in touch with the 360 audience nor have they been cutting edge like they were in the 90s. It was a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to be cutting edge in the 90s.

However, Rare did help bring a casual audience to the 360 with their Kinect support. Appealing to casuals is the reason MS bought them to begin with. So lets just be happy Rare is still around and found some success. As opposed to disappearing like many other studios.

Really? Have any names?

In my opinion it just seems that nothing from these studios has been announced so they're irreleavnt to the current discussion. We can only go buy what we've seen, not what could be. Hopefully both Sony and Microsoft pump out new core IP. I'd love to be a multi-console owner next-gen.

We've seen MS put out much more than entertainment apps and Kinect. But you seem to think that's their only focus.

Only focus? No.
Main focus? Yes.

There's a difference. I've said this a million times but you keep repeating the same thing over again. Worst case scenario, Microsoft turns into Apple. They provide the hardware and let developers put their games on the system. Games become just a category in the App Store even though they bring in the most money.

Once again, you pretend MS isn't delivering software and downplay MS's focus on games.

Yet the competition didn't have much to show, pushed streaming media, motion controls, and relied heavily on 3rd party multiplat software. But for some reason it only bothers you when MS does it.

I don't know what you're talking about. Stop being so defensive and blurting out lies.
1st-party wise, Sony is in a much better position. I don't think anyone can really deny that. They showed 4 1st party games at the PS Meeting and the only 3rd party game they actually showed was Destiny. The rest was just tech demos.

I'd hate if Sony put apps and services over games. They're not doing that. They're actually doing the complete opposite.

So can we say if MS show 4 first party new IP you will actually give them the same praise with no compromise.  If the only thing Sony has to do to get your respect is to show 2 sequels, one move game and another that looked like it will release on PSN, then I expect no different from MS reveal

They showed four 1st party games and pushed a bunch of 3rd party multiplat games.

The only 3rd party game they showed was Destiny? So they didn't rely heavily on 3rd parties on that show?

Look, you accused MS of relying on 3rd parites for games. But Sony didn't show much and relied heavily on 3rd parties for that show. Hence, Sony is doing exactly what you accuse MS of doing. Relying on 3rd parties to push their hardware.

Both 720 and WiiU are d00med for no real reason, awesome article.

Please stop linking us to this rubbish pseudojournalism.

Here's a handy hint to work out if something's worth publishing - if they use apostrophe's[sic] for plural's[sic] more than once in an article, do not link to it.

Nope, they hired a lot of guys from Codemasters and relic though. They might do the next PGR.
Is this something bad now?

I think you didn't get the joke... Rare did nothing for MS except Kinect titles.

Kinect games made by Rare this gen:

1.

Non-Kinect games made by Rare this gen:

5.

... Yeah, I did not get the joke ...

Are there any Rare game make after Kinect launch? Yeap 2 Kinects games in the last FIVE years.

You got the joke.

Rare developed Kinect Sports, Season 2 was developed by BigPark with some support of Rare.

Your statement: "Rare did nothing for MS except Kinect titles" is just wrong.

The studio was restructured and expanded after Kinect Sports Season 2. Since then they have been hiring a lot and are working on a next gen game.
At the end of the day, it is still a very bad assumption that Rare will only work on Kinect-only games in the future, because their last game was a Kinect game. And don't come up with that interview 3 years ago, thanks.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

One of the things that can be anoying is when people do not do their research then comment on things as if its fact.  One Kinect game and now Rare is branded a Kinect developer for life.

Yeah, yeah, I know. That's why that sentence ended with a smiley. :P
