Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Iwata Is Aware That People Believe That WiiU Is Underpowered And Says This Is A Misunderstanding

Nintendo probably thought they would ride the ps3 and 360 port gravy train till the ps4 and next box comes out but unfortunately for them they completely missed it. If they can't get 3rd party games now it will be impossible later, tough luck Nintendo.

He fails to mention the consoles that most people WiiU is underpowered compared to. WiiU being underpowered compared to PS4 and most likely Nextbox isn't a misunderstanding, it's fact.

Iwata doesn't fail to do anything, because what he's saying is that you can develop games on the WiiU (yeah it's that simple). He is not comparing the WiiU to any other console - you might want or expect him to to that, but he is not. For example, NBA 2K 14 will come out eventually for all consooles, including the WiiU, so the console is not underpowered. Similarly, the next Modern Warfare and other 3rd party games (Watch Dogs) should be on the WiiU as well, so the console is not underpowered.

What I think Iwata is saying as well is that there is this a seed of crazy thinking being cultivated by people like Epic and Sony and MS, that games have to look a certain way to be a game - this is the misunderstanding Iwata is talking about. I assume the way he plans to change this misundertsnading to make sucessful games on the WiiU (from the second half 2013), and once developers see that their games can sell well on WiiU, regardless of how they look, they will understand that the WiiU is not underpowered.

I love My Wii U, and the potential it brings to gaming.

Well, it isn't underpowered if you compare it to ps3/360 I guess. It's a fact though that it is underpowered compared to the Xbox infinite/ps4.

The real strategy is to release a lot of top quality first party games - these will move console sales enough to get third parties interested. This is how the DS became the highest selling system to date

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

"Underpowered" is a subjective term based on the goals of each individual development team. Clearly it's powerful enough for whatever Nintendo has in store... but that's about it. :/

But that's just it, though. The Wii is proof positive that a console that IS clearly underpowered can still do incredibly well--that had stuff like Call of Duty and most sports games, too, but it was still clearly a weaker (and ultimately more succesful) device. Games selling well on a console and said console not being as powerful as the others are two different things. I really don't think the latter is an argument worth pursuing for Nintendo.

And of course the power comparison is with other consoles. Otherwise my first cellphone which didn't even have a color screen still isn't underpowered either. I played the hell out of Snake and Tetris on that. :p

:D

Well, if you want to convince people of this, releasing a shiny first party game would be a very good start.

Why doesn't Nintendo try to develop hot new franchises? Always have to leave it up to third party. Its like they've gone stagnant in new IP development since the 90's. The N64 was the last great IP heavy console.

Hm.. I think they might be overwhelmed with all the games their fanbase expects to see from them and instead of taking the risk with a totally new IP they rather implement some new mechanics/slight twists in new games for an existing IPs.

Compared to the old days they've actually lowered development standards and the demands of newer technology and being a gen behind for two gens hurt their ability to develop faster. Nintendo left their trend setting new IP's to Rare in the 90's but in the 90's they took the reigns making Mario Party, Super Smash Bros, Wave Racer and plenty other IP's. Nintendo is lucky they bought Monolith, because they can pass that off as first party.

What a fucking liar!!!! It IS underpowered. Just compare it to the PS4... Get real Iwata!

Wel he isn't lying, cause he isn't comparing it to anything. He jsut said it it not under powered.

Under powered is an adjective used in comparison.   If he would have said, it is not weak, it would have been different.
