Forums - Sony Discussion - Competing with the Stingray

You say its a competitor to Apple TV, but if all it is, is an Xbox without a drive, then I don't see a $99 Xbox selling that much better than a $149 (blu-ray) disk PS3. I mean what would it do that the current consoles cannot do... they can already access TV services, streaming movies, buying movies.

Than why does Apple still sell the AppleTV? Streaming movies, buying movies...

I guess what I am saying is that the none CD-drive Xbox will not be a competitor to the Apple TV.

The Apple TV is ok, would love to know its sales, but would suspect its mostly apple fans that buy it. I've considered it, but its not an essential under the TV device right now. I don't see the Xbox competing for that space any more than it already is... if you see what i mean.

I dont want yet another device under my TV, if i can watch say Lovefilm, use the console as a stream device and it plays Blu-rays, that for me at $149 (if they go that low) is a much better sale of device than a $99 diskless device.

No device will ever appeal to everyone ;)
It's not about how you see it or if but if there is a market for such a device and only sales will tell us.

Thats a bit of a get out clause really, because of course only sales will tell us, but then there would be no discussion :)

Personally, I don't see a diskless 360 selling very well. And I doubt Sony will do much more than what most already expect them to do. Bring the 12GB to all regions for ~$149-$169, possibly lower the 250GB model to $199-$219 and the 500GB to $249-269. This would keep the price of entry around the same difference it is now, so not really change sales much. If anything, I think these prices would benefit the PS3 more than the 360.

This is because you look at it the wrong way. The rumour describes it more as a competitor to AppleTV which *also* plays 360-download-games. And if this will launch for $99 it will definitely increase 360-sales.

Your point?  It's still going to be pushed as an Xbox.  Unless they want to start of some large market campaign to sell it as a streaming device that can also play games off of Live (a feature that didn't really improve Windows 8 sales.)  This just seems like another product that MS has launched too late to really make much of an impact.  I mean if this had launced in 2009/2010, then it could have had an impact.  As it is, they are 3-4 years too late and there is way too many devices out there that do the same thing.  You have Roku (which has become one of the more popular ones), Apple TV, Western Digital Media Center, Boxee, YouView (in the UK), Sony's SMP-N200, Google TV, as well as every Smart TV that is being sold, now.

Also, I would imagine most would just pay ~$50 more to get a real 360 that does everything this device can do, as well as play EVERY 360 game and DVDs.  Or if Sony brings the 12GB to other regions for ~$149, which may end up being the same price as the Stingray, I can DEFINITELY see people picking one up, instead.  It would have all the popular apps, and be able to play PS3 games and DVDs/Blu-rays.

I pretty much agree with everything u said and also im not sure if people r quite ready for all digital, alog of people would still rather own physical copies of games

Sony will do nothing "against" stingray. Price wise, MS has a lot more options than Sony will ever have (The 250G XBox360 is now selling for $89 at some Mediamarkts here, that gives you an idea about how far MS can go

Where Do you live ?

lol I was about to ask the same thing.

in the world of dreams !!!

And if I posted a picture of the flyer, you'd just yell "photoshopped"? Some people are so predictable...

(for the rest of the people, google Media Markt Sihlcity, and download "Prospekte")

Wow, just wow. I want such a price so bad... This is exactly what I'm waiting for. X-box 360 Slim 250 GB for around 99 Euro. I couldn't care less about some discless dumbed down box. I wish I knew anyone in Switzerland who could get it for me :(

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Is it also rumored to be Kinect compatible?

Sony doesn't really have to do anything against it. Removing the Blu-Ray drive is out of the question for the PS3 since Sony wants you to buy Blu-Ray discs of their movies.

Sony won't directly compete with this Stingray model of the 360. People want a full-featured PS3, not one stripped down of its features or limited to downloads. America is certainly not ready for it and confusing the public with new models is a bad idea. It's best to let these consoles fade over time. Price cuts are really all that are needed.
