Forums - Politics - Why Fundamentalist religions are prone towards violence and other nasty things.

The heart of a Fundamentalist religion is a person commitment to a certain sacred text and trying to interpret it personally.  In this, some key elements will get raised and seeing critical to everything, in order to be manageable.  Anyone who doesn't fit into this will often made out to be an enemy.  In addition, because sacred texts can be challenging for people, they can become prone to certain teachers who will spin things a certain way.  And, if you thrown in subjective understanding of stuff, with one's own hatred and so on, and using the texts to justify things, about anything can be spun to do anything outrageous, like violence.  In this mindset, other elements will get eliminated that would lend balance.  End result is individuals who go together and end up doing harm and violence.

Respect for religion enables religious extremism

What we call religious extremists are the most true believers of their religion, they don't try and make it relevant to modern society they practice it as written and most likely the same way as the very first followers.

For example Israel, if they really took Judaism to heart and followed it to the tee and the world sat back and watched or turned a blind eye then every single Palestinian would be dead and there would be no such thing as an Israeli Arab for the Old Testament has plenty of events where Jewish prophets and other icons of Judaism carry out Yahweh sanctioned genocide against other non Jewish people.

There is a downside to when you want to give maximum freedom, and consider absolutism ALWAYS wrong, so you don't have an ability to take a stand on anything, to end up causing those who are more extreme to go unchecked in their views.

Personal conscience and zeal, untempered by anything else, and a sacred text, ends up resulting in attacks in the name of "justice" done by individuals to others.
