Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Goodbye DS, you were close. DS production stops

The PS2 is 4 years older, what the DS did was very impressive.

If it wasn't for the 3DS and Nintendo wanting to phase out the DS, I have little doubt that a $79.99 DS model with $19.99-$29.99 eShop back catalog titles could probably have sold for another 3 years at least.

I'm curious as to how many there are still out in the wild and what the official final number will be. They might not ship any, but if there are still some out there, they will sell....especially after this news. I honestly don't care if it beats the PS2......it is the sales king of handhelds and likely will be forever.

Unless Nintendo manages something insane with the home console/handheld hybrid. If anyone could pull that off, it would be Nintendo honestly.

Would be nice of we could take our farewells without having to wade through comments about whether the DS outsold the PS2 or not. This at directed to both sides.
It was an awsome system and deserves better.

Well, DS is still king of Japan at least, and probably always will be :/

That thing was just a monster other there at one point.

I find it quite shocking that Nintendo isn't shipping any more DS's, considering it was a sales phenomenon and reached PS2's lifetime sales in half the time. It still had a little bit left and would have outsold the PS2. Hell, it's still not entirely certain that PS2 outsold DS, and we may never know.. But oh well. If people really care about things like this one way or another I have to question where their priorities are in life anyway.

And now I realize the true point of the thread. I was stupid expecting anything better.

Some people....

Can anyone find sony actually announcing the PS2 sold over 155million as of 31st March 2013? I know its true but can't find the original source. Also did Sony actually announce that it stopped shipments of PS2 worldwide, or did people just assume from when they stopped shipping in Japan?

Edit: I assume we will finally get some closure with Sonys financial results and or E3.

PSP Lifetime more than PSV+3DS Lifetime.

Count out the faulty consoles from both sides.

DS wins.

Sony hardware has always been unreliable, were Nintendo makes near bulletproof hardware that won't stop working.

Also, anybody know the real numbers the 2 consoles sold in total ?

It was a huge success for Nintendo and probably no other handheld will ever overtake it in sales.

I don't think 3DS + Vita combined will even come close.

I think even 3DS by itself won't come close.

I wouldn't call Sony hardware unreliable, and even though Nintendo probably has the best track record, i know of alot of snapped ds's due to the dual screens and broken hinges.

Give it a warriors funeral. Almost beat the PS2 in 5 years less.

And in 100 years it still won't be ahead

and?

Defense Force always watching.

Reported.

OT. I hope with the next Sony financial results we'll get the official PS2 numbers and a official confirmation that production ceased so we can clear the air and know clearly which one sold more so that argument will be no more.

As for the DS, very impressive numbers, especially the software ones. I was always going by VGC numbers and thought that even though hardware numbers were close to PS2s the software was almost double in favor of PS2 now I know that DS numbers were highly undertracked.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!
