Forums - Movies & TV - Heavenly Sword Movie In The Making

Ratchet & Clank isn't the only Sony franchise being made into a movie. Heavenly Sworda PlayStation 3 exclusive, is also getting a film release, although it will be distributed direct-to-video.

Briefly mentioned in the footnote of Variety's article about the upcoming Ratchet movie, the publication reports that Blockade Entertainment is also producing a CG animated movie based on Ninja Theory's action game. Heavenly Sword is about a warrior, Nariko, who wields the magical "Heavenly Sword" -- a god's blade of immense power that drains its wielder of their life force -- long protected by her clan. Nariko embarks on a quest for vengeance against an invading King and his army.

The publication didn't mention a specific release for the Heavenly Sword movie, but Ratchet & Clank is expected to hit theaters in 2015.

Why? If no theatrical release and hence zero marketing the movie is going to be crappier than crap, production values and story. Might as well get a few HS fans together over a weekend and make a 4 part Youtube fanmade movie.

I suppose if the make it on a $20,000 budget they might turn a profit.

The animated Resident Evil films were good, at least compared to the live-action ones. Well, anything compared to the live-action ones seems good.

Good point quality-wise. But RE is far more popular than HS so success of the RE DTV animated movies was much more likely, this meant they could afford to invest reasonable amounts into the production. HS is a much more risky proposition so they will need to keep production costs down, of course they need to use Anna Torv as the Nariko VA.

I would like a theatrical release as well. I know the direct to video aspect of it raises questions about budget and presentation, but there are people out there that know what they are doing and seem to be wizards by creating great content without big budgets. You can even see TV series matching the quality of films nowadays. I just feel we need to wait and see how it turns out.

Definitely a direct to video may not have the same impact as a theatrical release, but at least I am happy to see that still Sony has this franchise in their thoughts and that maybe in the future we are to see more stuff from it.

Well its not really a movie if asked for. Maybe it will be good, maybe not? Who knows. I will watch it because if hjave played the game but seriously i can see only one reason for sony making this movie, to expand the franchsie. Maybe they have Heavenly Sword 2 in the works and thats the reason why they make a movie of that franchsie.

But there are tons of movies i would prefer them to make

God of War Movie
Uncharted Movie
Jak and Daxter Movie
Sly Copper Movie
Medievil Movie

Theyhave so many game franchsies that would perfectly fit as a movie too. So i dont understand why they choose Heavenly Sword.

No one could ever make a decent God of War movie, it would end up being like Clash of the Titans. Jak and Medievil, there's really not enough substance to build on for a decent narrative. Dunno about Sly, never played it, it's possible if they made it a kids flick they might do OK with it. While we're at it, I don;t rate Ratchet and Clank much of a chance even though I love that franchise and think all the characters in it are great I don;t see them holding up a story for 90 minutes.

Uncharted has possibilities, but the will never get a decent writer to do the script, and they'll never get a decent director to direct it. So while it's the best prospect for a decent movie it's unlikely to cut it.

Bascially the true break out box office smash, critically appreciated video game adaptation will be because a really talented film-maker, someone with a name in the industry, is a gamer, and they strike a game whose narrative inspires them. And they gather the right people around them to give such an adaptation the treatment it needs to succeed. That may be a 5-10 years away. But it'll happen eventually. I was hoping Prince of Persia would be it, it wasn't bad and it almost got the critics convinced video game properties can be good source material for movies. But in the end the bug name director and big name actors were there for the payday and the screenplay was not quite there.

Well i for myself quite enjoy Prince of Persia. If the movie turns out to be entertaining ts enough for me.

And for Jak and Daxcter and Medievil i personally believe they have as much potential as a movie like Ratchet and Clank.

They have the unique world, the have the unique charackters and they all have fun appeal. I dont see why you cant make a movie with those franchises.
