Forums - Sony Discussion - The cold truth: PS Vita sold less in one year than the PSP in 1 month

I remember reading about how Vita needed to sell "a lot" for 5 years to cover up the research costs. It was during the launch day of the console I think.

So, how is the console profitable since Day 1? I'm asking because I'm confused, not trolling

Also, It is a shame Vita is doing so poorly, because the handheld is great, the hardware is top-notch and the screen make every game beatiful.

Let's hope it gets solid third support and, of course, FF Type-0 :P

I love the Vita. Personally it's game library is on par or better then 3DS. I want to see the Vita to have a great comeback and be on the market for another 3 to 4 years with healthy games release from both Japanese and Western developers.

Although that is true, we're not just talking about a normal PSP month.

Yeah. I guess that's its first December in America, but still an uncomfortable case of cherry-picking.

I suppose you could compare both consoles' first Decembers for a more direct result.

Well, it was the most powerful machine with phone hardware till the release of the iPad 4(about 1 year after Vita's release), came with a 5" OLED screen when high-end smartphones were mostly coming with 4.3inch screens and even the 3G version was cheaper to buy than any similarly spec'd smartphone at the time(Galaxy Note, I believe, was the only one with comparable screen, and it costed about 500 euros while having inferior hardware). Vita's hardware itself probably was making Sony lose money, however, thanks to the high priced memory cards that were obligatory if someone wanted to play games on the device, they probably had a profit on the hardware.

Mobile Phones are sold at a huge profit. I don't know why you're obsessing on the size of the Vita screen. It's irrelevant. Read the article I linked to. Vita is profitable.

Wii U is also profitable, IF sold together with a game. We don't know if Sony was talking about Vita only or if it was also counting a game or memory card together with a Vita to make the console profitable. Screen size increases costs and OLED screens are probably the most expensive screen tech out there, it's hard to believe the hardware itself was being sold for a profit at only $250 in Q1 2012.
