Forums - Gaming - Finally some data on mobile advertising

The value of mobile advertising to app developers has been the dark matter of mobile ever since the two largest mobile ad companies got snapped up by Google and Apple. Everybody knows it's there and it's powerful, but nobody seems to know what it actually looks like. Millennial Media has been talking about ad impressions by platform and device, but it wouldn't divluge other crucial advertising stats such as click-through rate, cost per impression, or total ad spend.

Finally an Ad company is talking again. Chuck Jones over at Forbes brings ad data from MoPub, which seems to be growing as Millennial is shrinking:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/chuckjones/2013/04/18/apples-ios-mobile-ad-metrics-dominates-android/

MoPub is an ad-serving platform for mobile applications that allows advertisers to bid on ad inventory from thousands of iOS and Android smartphone application providers/suppliers.  Over 230 Tier 1 brand advertisers (up from 180 last quarter) and 58 of the top 100 largest advertisers use MoPub.  The application providers come from the US, Europe, Asia and Latin America with 45 billion monthly ad impressions (up from 30 billion last quarter) across two dozen verticals.

Here are the key takaways from MoPub's report:

- iOS as a whole earns 75% of ad spend to Android's 25%.

- iPhone ad spending is roughly twice as high as Android phone spending.

- iPad ad spending is twenty times higher than Android tablet spending, the latter accounting for less than 1% of total.

- Higher click through and conversion rates allow ads on iOS to command a much higher price per thousand impressions than Android.

It's worth noting that while MoPub is providing a clearer picture of mobile advertising than anybody else right now, it's just one company in a very competitive market. It's business operations are liable to be biased for or against certain partners depending on that competitive landscape. For starters, it only seems to serve ads to iOS and Android apps.

To be honest.. for developers it was never and is probably never gonna be a viable platform anyway.. I mean.. In many countries million of people can't buy something from the playstore cause they don't have a creditcard.. Apple, (like nintendo, sony and ms) made these gift card so you can top up your account with some money.. Google does the same but doesn't release them worldwide frustrating developers.. People can't buy your app.. it's like google doesn't care about other developers.. not to mention the piracy.. I know developers who had like 95% piracy rate.. forcing them to make an ad supported version.. and latter on dropping it entirely

people bitch about Apple.. but they heck made sure people who buy their devices know what they buy, how to use it, keep them using it and more importantly getting them to spend more money on it.. It's like an entirely different audience.. it's like people who buy a race car and race in it and people who buy it so they can say they own one and then leave it in the garage without sunlight..

Anyway for google it doesn't really matter anymore... Google dominates the mobile search market with 93% in the US.. and thats were they promised to improve for advertisers (and they actually did since i talked to them in january.. you can now target mobile devices far better then before) so advertisers are a bit more happy know.. (still doesn't solve the bigger problem of people not comfortable buying stuff with their mobile, which is hurting google the most)

But they are feeling the heat of Facebook.. a lot of advertisers are going to facebook cause it has waaaay better information on potential targets.. the tools to target your audience is like: facebook = sniperrifle.. google = shotgun... and if they can implent their rumoured video ads (costs for advertisers 1 million dollar a day!) it could go fast in favour of Facebook.. Facebook ads are actually getting more expensive and google ads cheaper which is a pretty big sign for the future..

For ZTE, Huawei, and other white box OEMs that don't care about branding, customer support, or actually earning a profit, Android will always be a godsend.

Apparently Sony has already sold more of their few month old new android phone then lifetime vitas.

Your posts in here are some of the most informative and seemingly non-agenda, or ideal boosting I have seen from posters here usually. But, I just wanted to point out the data in your graphs according to the website is only based on the US and Canada, and not the world.

Also, do not accidently type Chikita instead of Chitika when looking at the source like I did, or you will get pictures of a nudy model.

You seem to be confused. If Samsung ditches Android ( they won't, but let's say they will just to keep you happy) there will be more room to grow for other manufacturers. It will be good for them if anything.

It seems like a commercially viable vehicle to me. Especially after hearing the news about the latest Sony product, which according to YOU, is an irrevelant company in the grand scheme of things, sells 4.6 million handsets in 40 days, which is approximately same as the entire quarter smartphone sales of a company you post ads for pretty much every day.

Of course, if there was a company paying Sony 250 million dollars every quarter(which I guess is the definition of a commercially viable platform) things would be looking much better.

Ow i know thats us and canada.. These were easy to find freely.. Every month i have to read these reports like these for my work but i cant share much data out of it cause of contracts.. But world wide there is a similar trend going on.. For examplw While the amount of downloads of apps are the same for ios and android is the same 100% vs 90% this first quarter 2013 (korea and japan drives up android while china drives up ios) The amount of revenue is 250% vs 100% which is frustrating for developers.. It seems that Android users only want free stuff.. Ad wise and app wise the money is at Apples side.. So while Android is selling more then iOS people don't actually choose for android.. They just want a smartphone and ow look it has android on it.. Not that android will go away cause it great for manufacters not having to spend millions on an OS but it could be much better then it is now but google isnt really doing much about it except making their own ad system better.. Its also pretty impossible to change the mindset of android users about free stuff vs paid.

Thats also why advertisers and developers are eyeing windows phone very closely.. Hoping with its closed store, minimum device requirements,  it would be more like apple. But it will take some time for WP to create a viable userbase for advertisers and developers.. There isn't any doubt it will have one the only question is when..
