Forums - Sony Discussion - How much money Sony really lost with the PS3

Glass half empty perspective. On the other foot, to some, it must ache, just a tad, knowing that Sony's worst console will still outsell Microsoft's best.

Yes, that is even more interesting if we look at how bad they managed the PS3 launch and still came a year later. In the end, Sony's totally terrible management of the first 4 years of PS3 (price, launch date, PSN hack) will still beat the best effort MS ever made in consoles.

so? the 360 hasn't made Microsoft any money either

Most of the loss where from the development of The Last Guardian.

Bet with gooch_destroyer, he wins if FFX and FFX-2 will be at $40 each for the vita. I win if it dont

So the comeback of the PS3 never really happened. And it did not make any money yet and won't recoup the money at all. This is not spinning, no trolling just hard facts from the financial reports. This is why I don't get all these celebrations of Sony and the PS3. Imagine where the Xbox 360 or the Wii would be if Nintendo or MS were willing to take a 5 billion USD loss...

Why do we need to imagine? We just need to look at where the Xbox 360 is now. It took more of a hit in its first two years than the PS3 did I believe.

Resume of Sony financial in Game Division.

FY2006: -$1.95 billion
FY2007: -$1.21 billion
FY2008: -$0.59 billion
FY2009: -$0.89 billion * Vaio loss merged
FY2010: +$0.33 billion * Vaio loss merged
FY2011: -$0.24 billion * Vaio loss merged
FY2012: +$0.51 billion

TOTAL: $4.04 billion loss

* FY2006 = April 2006 to March 2007 *

The biggest point is how much Vaio related did lost to NPS division in FY2009, FY2010 and FY2011? Sony lost a lot of money in the Game Division? They did like Microsoft but how much of these loss in FY2009, FY2010 and FY2011 can be attributed to Vaio?

I think without Vaio the Game Division had profit in FY2009 *maybe this year not*, FY2010 and FY2011. That give us $3.24 billion loss without add the FY2009/FY2010/FY2011 profits.

I think the Sony loss with the Game Division until the last quarter is close to $2 billion and Sony is on track to cover that loss with PS3 profit in the next years.

What does 360 have to do with this?

You said it is to do with Bravias, it has zero to do with Bravias...  agreed?

Dont change the subject and deal with the point I made.  We DO know the PS3 made those losses... agreed?

Sorry I just did a mistake... Bravia instead Vaio.

I think it was well known that Sony has still some heavy losses, 360 is barely breaking even and Wii is pissing all over both of them.

I agree, the majority of Sony losses for the PS3 were concentrated in the first 2-2.5 years, with each year showing marketed improvement over the last.  If GAME was left as a stand alone unit I also believe that the game division would have profitted in FY 10 and 11 and might have had a small loss for FY 09.  Its also important to remember that the original playstation and PS2 had first year fiscal year losses of ~500 million, and those became commercial successes.

there is absolutely no way you can calculate it since the years the ps3 has been profitable it was merged with other division. and you tend to assume alot in your post "The Vita was not yet launched and the Vaio business was going strong according to the report." the vaio bussiness was never that really profitable for sony and they were working on the vita R&D by that time.

Bravia?  Why do you keep bringing TV's in to this.  They have NEVER been in the same division.

Bravia is in Consumer products

Playstation was in Networked products and services

TV losses have never impacted on Playstation gains or losses.

lol I fixed ten minutes ago when you pointed the first time.
