Sort of a naive question. Of course Nintendo can always suprise us.
Kid Icarus was a surprise. Supporting and Publishing Baoynetta 2 was a surprise. Supporting and Publishing Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem was a surprise. The GamePad was a surprise.

The thing is... most people who heavily critize Nintendo never actually tried their games or products. The Gamepad is a fine example. While it´s not, in any way, revolutionary, games like ZombiU and NintendoLand showed that it really can give gamers some different and creative experiences, but people prefer the old gimmick talk instead of actually trying it.

By the way, pratically every big developer today are basing their launches of the same and same franchises, Fifa, PES, Call of Duty, Halo, Assassin´s Creed, Tekken, Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy. Here comes another CoD, another GTA, another Battlefield......so there´s no point about arguing that Nintendo only uses the same franchises. Every company do that.

I guess it only shows that nintendo gets more hate than many other companies, for whatever reason. Sony and Microsoft never do anything different but Nintendo should be pointed out for not creating the most mind-bending designs every single time.

Around the Network

since the n64 days nothing surprised me except SMG.

when people think new IPs they think about names, different looking characters.. I think about gameplay mechanics...for example gears of war I dont even consider a new IP.

Tsubasa Ozora

Keiner kann ihn bremsen, keiner macht ihm was vor. Immer der richtige Schuss, immer zur richtigen Zeit. Superfussball, Fairer Fussball. Er ist unser Torschützenkönig und Held.

Erm... is this a trick question? Does Microsoft surprise? Does Sony surprise with those new titles on the PS4 reveal? It was sequals and GT Version B.

It's a case of: they sell and Nintendo likes making money--glad I could crack this devilishly difficult case.

On our next exciting episode, ECM is hot on the Case of the Clueless Message Board Poster (Part MMMMMMMMMMMMMXIII).

(In other news, when Nintendo innovates massively (see: Wii, Nintendo), they get s*** on; when they give the masses what they want they get...s*** on so please tell me why catering to what *you* consider "mind blowing" should be even a remote concern?)

LOL Nintendo hasn't had gamers and casuals alike since the mid 90's. Last gen for them was pretty much 90% casuals.

Good job--you get an A for indugling in non sequitur, now would you care to address my points?

" (In other news, when Nintendo innovates massively (see: Wii, Nintendo), they get s*** on; when they give the masses what they want they get...s*** on so please tell me why catering to what *you* consider "mind blowing" should be even a remote concern?)"

I was responding to that.

Responding to what? They innovate, 'core gamers' s*** on them; they play it safe, 'core gamers' s*** on them and your response is something about them not having core and casual at the same time since the 90s...so what? How is that germane to my comment? You're responding to an argument I'm not making or even touching upon and has **** all to do with the OP's post.

The point is, they can't win. Period. They can go out and get Bayonetta 2, but that doesn't count because it's not being made by EAD (I assume this is the argument now, since Bayo2 doesn't count)??

So as I said: you give the core gamer, allegedly, what they want--edgy, "mind blowing", etc.--but it doesn't count because, uh, well, we say it doesn't.

Nintendo cannot win, because they do not allow themselves to. The company is run by a bunch of old men who have stagnated from being true creative types at the peak of their creative abilities in core character and game development in the 80 and early 90's. Its almost as if Miyamoto does nothing they are stuck in a rut. They need to build up some new minds and create fresh new games. Miyamoto said it himself, he cannot see himself making a game he cannot play on the couch with his family. Thats just the type of company they are. Once they free themselves from the shackles of nostalgia to Miyamotos hey-day, they will be free to go after other age groups as well as children and their respective families. Until then, enjoy the nostalgia show. All you can expect them to change is the way you play the same games. In this day and age the expectations are much higher. As I said in another post, if I was a child I would love them because thats how I fell in love with them, but as I grew older (just like with disney) I moved on. I can still come back but Nintendo isn't making strides to gain gamers like myself.

To the last sentence - I hope they never do. I still love Disney and Nintendo and some things are pure and don't need to be corrupted. Go to Sony and Xbox for your needs but leave Nintendo out of it.

LOL....Yes....so much for your thoughts because Disney bought Lucas Arts and Marvel. They are reaching out to people like myself. So much for your theory. I'll say it again...it doesn't matter what even you think of Nintendo they wont change unless their public credibility forces them to. It seems they listened to frustrations about third party core titles, but the problem is the third party titles they acquired are current gen.You might like what they do but ultimately it doesnt matter because they still did what they wanted to do. They do what they do and hope you'll accept it, plain and simple.

I don't have a theory. I have an opinion. Also LOL all you want. Nintendo DOES do what they want and I'm very happy with it.

Yes, this is called double standards and bias. It´s not like they didn´t announce racing games and FPSs regularily. Especially Killzone after 2 PS3 titles and the not yet released PSV spinoff wasn´t exactly a surprising game.

Around the Network

Yes, they just prefer to do more of the regular stuff.

Zelda Skyward sword was surprising and groundbreaking
Kid Icarus Uprising is easily the best 'new' IP has been released as of late, gameplay wise theres nothing alike...
SuperMario3DLand is the first original 3D Mario ever released on a handheld
Luigis mansion 2 is a sequel to a 12 year old game...etc.

seriously, if you accuse Nintendo for not being original, what do you say about the others?

Thats not the point. This exactly why Starfox Adventures turned the way it did, Nintendo takes a game likes the gameplay and reskins it with their first party. That is their train of thought when they make new games. Its a deceptive fact concerning true creativity but really a new, fresh IP for Nintendo is really what would send messages and waves throughout the gaming world as to whether they even care about having a varied strong gaming community.

you mean like Xenoblade?

Or all of the new "Wii" games that came out last gen?

Or some of the interesting downloadable games that come out now like Crashmo?

Or maybe bringing back not so popular IP like Pikmin and Kid Icarus that ever even sold that amazingly in the first place?

Or doing what no other company is willing to do outside of a little downloadable game and make some amazing 2D games.

You said it youself, Nintendo makes amazing gameplay, who cares what skin is put on it, whether Mario or Metroid or Starfox.  Those are just to minimize the risk.  In the end Their games are top notch and will remain so for a long time to come.

With the announcement of the new 3DS Zelda and previously Animal Crossing, Zelda OoT 3D, Zelda Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong Country, and many more, which are all practically remakes: what does this say about the direction Nintendo has taken? Just about every Nintendo game lately harkens back to the olden days. I know some people will love it but remember the N64? Nintendo was miles beyond any developer at that time, with games that were absolutely mindblowing, cutting edge and just perfect. Playing Nintendo games now feels like a trip down to memory lane. And it bores me to death.

Is this a case of unable or unwilling to blow people's minds? 'Cause the last time I was blown away by a Nintendo game was Super Mario Galaxy, which was truly innovative and clever. Almost everything after seems like polished up old games.

The jaded curve is the problem.  This is when it becomes harder and harder to surprise someone despite consistant changes.    When you start expecting everything to have major innovations, the effect of smaller innovations have less impact.  It then becomes harder and harder to feel surprised.

Several surprises have already been listed and I could list many more.

It should also be noted that we are exactly 5 months into the life of the Wii U and we've already seen many big surprises with assuredly many more to come.  Hell, E3 hasn't even happened yet.

It's not about Nintendo being willing and able to surprise, it's about us be willing and able to be surprised...or at least recognize them when we see them.

To clarify, I'm not talking about console innovations, about mature or gritty content or about unexpected things just for the element of surprise. I'm talking about the difference between Super Mario 64 and New Super Mario Bros. About the difference between Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past "remake".

Nintendo, for me, was about striving for the next level, striving to making the gaming community shake on its feet. New directions that changed gaming forever. 3D games were changed forever after Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. But lately, there have been announced more remakes than awe-inspiring, clever new games.

Nintendo is still about quality. This Link to the Past remake? Polished, fun, quality game. No doubt. But does it wow anyone? Frankly it bores me if nothing else. And there are countless of Nintendo IPs that seem to be stuck in time (2D Mario and Animal Crossing also come to mind).

My question is, is Nintendo deliberately taking this direction, or is the creative juice not flowing as rich as it once used to?

It's the first EAD developed 2D Zelda since Link's Awakening (or Link's Awakening DX if you want to get super-technical). That's a pretty worthy thing.

Oddly, Nintendo's push for retro-styled games is quite groundbreaking when you consider the competition would be offering games like DKCR or NSMBU as $10 sideshow attractions.

Plus, i'd say Skyward Sword was pretty groundbreaking.

Sony and Microsoft dont get bitched at because their platforms are created for third party titles as well as first party most of the time. Sony fucked up with the cell and made it hard on the third parties, which is why you saw them appologizing to fans and third parties at the PS4 conference. They made up for it by making the PS4 just amazing. Read the articles, the third parties are impressed and Sony, themselves seem to be quite happy with their user-friendly console. Nintendo doesn't care what third parties think about their console, they just want their games (pay attention when I say that they dont care). This gen thats not going fly.
