It’s a Saturn with a Netlink built in”
A rare, previously known piece of Sega history was revealed to members of Assembler Games earlier today.
The ex-Sega employee, known only to onlookers as Super Magnetic, uploaded pictures of what was dubbed internally the Sega Pluto. It’s an unreleased console that the employee sat on for 14 years, according to the post.
“It’s not that Nomad wannabe — it’s a Saturn with a Netlink built in,” Super Magnetic says. “I was told that only two of these prototypes were made — and this is #2.”
It works, and pictures below prove it, though the Japan-based poster says it is a region locked North American device.
“The front features two controller ports, and on top you have a flip-top drive bay, a cart slot, a Power button, and the venerable Reset button,” Super Magnetic explains. “Note that the logo still says Saturn, so I’m guessing the Pluto codename was simply that, and they were thinking of branding it with the Saturn name. (The logo is printed on production-style though so I’m guessing they were fairly serious about this one.) The left and right sides feature beautiful-and-exotic vents, while the back is standard Saturn, save for the Netlink ports. The bottom has nothing of note except for the “PLUTO-02″ sticker (which is, of course, of note).”
If nothing else, it shows there is plenty of Sega history yet to be unearthed, with much of the Sega and Sonic communities still on the lookout for something new. Take a look at a few shots in the gallery below, with more at the above cited link.
