Forums - Sales Discussion - "3DS at 8 millions in the US, better than the DS in the same timeframe"

It must be overtracked by almost half a million then?

There was a lot of confusion with the DS when it first came out because the GBA was still relatively new at that time (only 3 years old). People didn't know if this was some kind of stop gap Nintendo machine and no one really was into the touch screen.

When the DS Lite and NSMB came out, that's when the DS took off. The PSP also gave the DS fairly hard competition for a year and half.

Everyone saying 3rd year is "what counts" or something doesn't know math.

DS launch: Nov 2004
New Super Mario Bros: May 2006 (18 months after launch)
DS Lite release: June 2006 (19 months after launch)
Holiday 2006 was 24/25 months after launch

3DS is currently midway through its 25th month.

ya people who think 3DS will get a huge boost like DS are insane, they lost the Brain Age/Nintendogs croud to smartphones/tablets, New Super Mario Bros isnt new anymore, 3DS XL didnt have nearly the effect of the DS Lite and its next redesign probably wont have the same effect as the DSi.

I still believe 3DS can sell 15-20 million consistently for the next 2-3 years but it will never reach the 25-30 million DS did from 2007-2009.

Yeah But DS lite came in 3rd year. Nintendo needs another revision.

The DS Lite launched in about the 20th month, so it came in the second year. Peope forget that the DS took a long time to really take off in the USA.

That's because it was going head-to-head with the PSP.

Im still sad that GBA was replaced so soon, it deserved to have a full 5-6 year cycle and probably would have passed 100 million. DS shouldnt have released until DS Lite and NSMB came out.

I'm guessing this is through October 2006 for the DS and February 2013 for the 3DS.  24 months tracked by NPD for both.  Kind of misleading as the 3DS has likely fallen behind at this point in mid april (or mid December '06 for the DS).  The DS did 2.518 million in November and December.  It also did 1.233 million in the first three months of 2007.  In comparison, the 3DS did 317-340k in Jan/Feb, and VGC has it at 120k in March for a total of 437-460k.

After that point it likely won't be much of a contest.  The DS was cracking 400k in nearly every month of the year, sometimes even 500k.  It also did 4 million across November and December.  That's more than the 3DS did in the full year of 2012.

I think we will get one, maybe not this year but in 2014, 3DS Pro or something like that, all the aesthetic changes of the XL, better battery life, maybe better 3D effect and a 2nd analog nub. Personally i think DSi should have never released and instead save those new features for 3DS, it would have made it seem like a bigger upgrade

Enough with the 2nd nub.. it doesnt need it when only a few games make use of it..  seriously its not gonna happen.

We have 8.2 million for US as of 30th March 2013.
