Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie:Wii U Releases will "Dramatically Increase"

Also, Impressive Digital Sales and Soaring 3DS Performance

In a conversation with Games Industry International, the famous President of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime, acknowledged the weakness of the Wii U’s current library of games while promising that that’s all set to change in the near future.

“What I would say about Wii U – and what [Nintendo President] Mr. Iwata has said – is that the pace of launches has been slower than we hoped. But as we prepare for E3, the pace of launches for Wii U is going to dramatically increase," Fils-Aime said.

Wii U has been mired with poor sales since a very promising launch in late 2012. Much of this is attributed not to Nintendo’s weakness as a brand – it is perhaps the strongest singular hardware brand in the industry – but due to a lack of compelling games.

Fewer than 50 titles have launched for Wii U in North America so far, only a handful of them are exclusives, and none are killer apps or bona fide system sellers. The latter problem is likely to change once Nintendo’s heavy-hitters start to launch, however; Zelda, Mario Kart and Smash Bros. are just a few games that may change Nintendo’s console fortunes.

On the other hand, Nintendo’s handheld fortunes are through the roof. Nintendo 3DS is clobbering its rival, Sony's PlayStation Vita, and Fils-Aime confirmed in this same conversation that “life-to-date 3DS game sales [have] surpass[ed] 20 million units in the US.” Digital sales are also way up: 15 titles are available digitally on 3DS that were specifically published by Nintendo, and those digital versions represent 11 percent of total sales. Digital sales on 3DS are up 55 percent, year-over-year.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Doesn't have to much to see a dramatic increase when the baseline is close to 0 first-party games in a while.

Pretty much this :D

He also said the WiiU will run 3rd party software better.

Reggie lies.

Remember the last time Reggie used the word "dramatically".

We all know that Mario Kart and the like is coming though, but I would hope they have a price cut to go along with the games too.

I think 299.99 is a good price for this Christmas. It comes with 8gb of storage and the wiiu gamepad. I think it compares favorably to an Xbox 360 4gb Kinect Bundle in terms of a hardware purchase. Plus it's a system with a future rather than a past.

dramatically increase out of nothingness

Well, both PS3 and 360 will likely get hefty price cuts this holiday season. It won't compare favourably to $149 or $199 systems with thousands of games if it's still at $299 and $349 by then.

If they get bundles with move or kinect at that price point it will be an interesting product for some people. But the Wiiu is still selling into the core Nintendo Market at this point. Many many of the people who will be purchasing Nintendo systems as this point are going to be doing it for the exclusive content. It will be largely a different consumer than that casuals buying last gen systems.  You seem to be but I know that I'm not at all concerned about a Wiiu Christmas with a Zelda Remake in it, Pikmin 3 on the market, and either Mario 3d or Mario Kart. They will sell all the units they ship during the Christmas buying season. They would hold off until next year on doing any sort of price cut.

Nintendo really must have been anticipating better third party support (hence why they left this portion after release so wide open). There's really no way they couldn't have seen this coming otherwise.

Looks like they had an unexpected drop in support (by companies such as EA) who Nintendo had planned on releasing titles during this period.

It'd better. If sales don't pick up soon, Nintendo is probably going to have to suspend production until they can clear their stock. And it doesn't look like it'll be hitting it's stride any time soon.

The Gamecube managed to last almost two years before resorting to that. If the Wii U can't even last one, then they're going to be in serious trouble.

They don't need to win E3, they need to DESTROY it.
