This was probably the best thing to come from the direct for me.
Hopefully Earthbound will get some great sales to show Nintendo that there's demand for it. Really recommend this one to anyone who hasn't played it. It's insane that Nintendo have neglected this series for so long.

Given that this is the one singular virtual console candidate that has been most anticipated since Nintendo announced the service, i'd say it fairly well qualifies

Thank goodness! Now Reggie won't be threatened by death notes anymore. He can finally get some rest. (And hopefully, during sleeping, he'll decide that it might be a good idea to listen to himself and pick up the pace with the Wii U SW releases.

I was going to come in here and ask why this is a megaton, considering it's massive popularity and the ease of obtaining fully working ROMs. I guess there are still some who haven't played it. So sad.
Is it for WIi U VC? I thought it was for 3ds VC? Or is Ninty getting their crap together and having VC be unified between the two systems like the "other" companie's classics?

Yes, that was something I noticed too. Someone in Nintendo watches Miiverse and reports to the higher ups interesting developments and fan reactions. That I conclude from the show of Miiverse-comments. That's positive, it means Miiverse is a working feedback-channel.
I wonder if this will devalue the SNES original as a collectable. Now that it can be purchased cheap on the virtual console only the most hardcore collectors will want the carts.

No, it's for WiiU-VC. In Japan it is already released as a VC-game, that's why exists the Miiverse-community that people posted into the stuff Iwata has shown. A unified VC would be cool though.

Don't the people who buy the original cart super-hardcore to begin with?
I mean there's a fan patch and all.
