A new Zelda game has been announced for the Nintendo 3DS.

The first details of the game were released during today's Nintendo Direct broadcast. It is set in the same world as the 1991 SNES classic A Link To The Past, and is not just a 3D remake of that game.

Hyrule has a similar look and feel, but the new Legend of Zelda game (it doesn't yet have a subtitle) will heavily incorporate the handheld's 3D screen to its gameplay, especially the notion of depth and height. Footage shown during the Nintendo broadcast depicted Link being hurled up in the air towards the player, avoiding obstacles.

Interestingly, Link also has the ability to transform into a crude 2D drawing. When Link activates this ability the perspective of the game changes, switch to a side-on view as Link walks along walls like moving graffiti. Link also benefits from other perks while inhabiting this form – he can now slip through narrow gaps and between the iron bars of a jail cell.

No official date or subtitle was announced for the new 3DS Zelda title but it will be released in time for the 2013 holiday season. A special trailer will be made available on the Nintendo eShop, showcasing the game in all its three-dimensional livery.

Good as long as it doesnt play like the NDS Zelda games - I really hated the touch screen controls, 3D and depth I can understand and it looks interesting ;)

I just watched the trailer on the eshop and it looks like it use standard button controls. In the trailer there is an "A" action icon on the lower right portion of the screen. Its hard to see, but lights up when Link melds into the walls. Also Link needs to charge up to perform a spin attack akin to LTTP pointing even further to "B" being the sword button.

I'm an advocate for motion controls, Nintendo, and Kicking freaking Toad to the Moon!

Do you no if the trailer you watched is up on youtube? Or is it the same trailer as shown in the ND?

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Since I'm not very nostalgic about 2D Zeldas, I admit to being a bit disappointed. Still, it makes me glad to see so many users being happy about this announcement :)

Have you ever played an old school 2D Zelda? I to this day, think that the original LoZ might be the best in the whole series! And not only because of nostalgia; it had more action going on than todays Zelda's and it was all about exploration! Man, the first time I played it I didn't know what I was supposed to do... My big brother told me to go down into the cave, but as a little brother I oppose every idea from my older sibling, so I went exploring. And died. And I didn't find Dungeon 1 first... I think I found 2 or 3 first....

Yup. I have played through the original The Legend Zelda and played through about half of Link's Awakening. Both games are great fun to play, but I find them bland in comparison to games like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess. At least I know that Wind Waker will arrive soon for sure, which is another great title.

Bottom line in any case is that people complaining about this title being 2D should be less egotistical :P

It's a extended trailer. It shows a bit more stuff including a quick look at one of the boss fights. Here's the link to trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ6b98P8i78

2D Zelda! yeah! I just didn't like Link's design, it would be better to have a wind waker- like design
