Forums - General Discussion - Can Galaxy S4 Beat the IPhone or just another "Failed" Samsung Attempt ?

Well as of March 2011 Apple announced the Iphone line sold 100 million units and I wouldn't be to surprised if that number is around the 200 million range now maybe a bit more. There's not much solid numbers for each Iphone generation, but I didn't look hard though.

Now Samsungs got some numbers for their Galaxy phones:

Galaxy S - 24 million

Galaxy S2 - 40 million

Galaxy S3 - 50 million

Total: 114 million as of March 2013 in about 3 years compared to apples 6 years. So going by that and by the huge demand for the S4 coming out in a couple weeks I'd say it's only a matter of time for the Galaxy line of cell phones to surpasses the Iphone.

I think my maths are wrong but the prediction is just to iPhone 5 sell 170 million in one year... how can all the iPhone together sell only 200 million?

TOTAL: 318,878 units (even so the market today is way bigger than three years ago)

Fiscal Year Q1 [Oct-Dec] Q2 [Jan-Mar] Q3 [Apr-Jun] Q4 [Jul-Sep] Total sold
2007 270,000 1,119,000 1,389,000
2008 2,315,000 1,703,000 717,000 6,890,000 11,625,000
2009 4,363,000 3,793,000 5,208,000 7,367,000 20,731,000
2010 8,737,000 8,752,000 8,398,000 14,102,000 39,989,000
2011 16,240,000 18,650,000 20,340,000 17,070,000 72,300,000
2012 37,044,000 35,100,000 26,000,000 26,900,000 125,044,000
2013 47,800,000 47,800,000
Fiscal Year Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4

Reacord sales every quarter and year .

No, but second place is still a great place.

Well they beat them in quality long ago. Should beat them in sales with this one or the next.

Second place still makes a truckload of money, Pepsi for example. Its very hard to beat the iPhone because it was the first, iPhone became the generic word for smartphone, Samsung can only keep attacking Apple and stealing market share I don't think they will ever be first but a very profitable second place is no joke either.

In every market there is a lot of brands at the beginning but they always end up with 2 big dogs in first and second place and they make serious money, the rest fight for a 3rd place and with time dissapears.

It's possible but not too likely with great competition from HTC one and Sony Xperia Z and even the Nokia Lumia series and potentially others

Xbox One, PS4 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch will sell better than Wii U Lifetime Sales by Jan 1st 2018

I don't see it as a "failed" attempt, Samsung is making so much money they're laughing all the way to the bank.

But no, the Galaxy S4 will not because the iPhone 5S will be the main iPhone released in 2013 (words of a different sized one are circulating as well). There will be at least 10 flagship Android phones released in 2013, including the S4, Motorola X and HTC One.

While Samsung throws a few nice custom apps on their phones and pack it with great hardware, their build quality has nothing on Motorola, Sony or Nokia at this point (all 3 I'd rank ahead of Apple in terms of durability, Nokia and HTC are about on par aesthetically.) They also half-ass a lot of their ideas -- they throw together a bunch of things that should be great, but most of it is rushed to market.  Kudos to Samsung for making the only recognizable Android brand not called "Droid", but they still have a long way to go.

Google Now, Google Maps, etc; are excellent, but those are Google products.
Samsung S Voice is complete garbage
Apple's Siri and Maps are both in Beta at best.

Long story short: No, the Galaxy S4 will not beat Apple, but it also isn't a failure since Samsung will be banking like crazy. I like the S3 (4.7" w/ physical buttons) but it's already a little too big, the S4 is a monster. Nexus 4 is about ideal size (4.7" screen, on-screen buttons), shame it's a super fragile LG product that doesn't work on Verizon.

The comparison is misleading, since the smartphone market grew so rapidly.  I could just as easily turn it around and point out that in 2012 ALONE Apple sold 135.8 million iPhones.  In 1 year that's more than all Galaxy S phones combined.

Not a chance, it will DO well but not iPhobe well

No, but I believe it will be closer than ever.

They don't need one phone to outsell iPhone, because they have many more that outsell Apple phones by a LOT now. And can I get a link to the $50 Samsung Android phones, because I sure am interested o.O

I got my Samsung Glaxy S3 last year for $50, still felt ripped off for what I got so i would not suggest it to anyone.
