Forums - Gaming Discussion - Cliff Bleszinski on always-online: "Deal with it"

Augen said:
At some point someone like me who has dumped 1000s of hours into gaming over past 20+ years fell out of the "average user" simply because I have never had stable internet?

Diablo 2 was not a lesser game for not having always online and DIablo 3 (which I still have yet to be able to play) has not been better for it.

Sim City 4 was not less, and new "Sim City" is not better.

I really do not mind the OPTION, but to be demanded and told "who care that you spend a small fortune on our industry, you don't have reliable internet so we do not care" seems to be a bit jarring. Roughly 40% of people in the US are in a similar situation to me so I'm not some bizarre "cabin in the woods" 1% outlier.

This, to me, is what happens when people within an industry live in a bubble. They think their reality and their acquaintances reality is everyone's reality. They cannot conceive of a gamer who routinely losses internet due to their shoddy cable companies connection.

I was perfectly content in the "old days" whe I played games before having any sort of internet connection at all. I managed to enjoy the Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, N64 and PS2 before ever logging on. That old experience is still fine by me and it is clear that in these games always online is just another form of DRM coated in "experiencing enhancing PR BS".

^This. Well put, sir.

No, always online is stupid and Adam fucked up.

Well.....that seems unneeded and unhelpful. Its not like name-calling is solving anything. There's a different between getting fired and resigning? I don't know about the business world, but it is often just a way to make a more "graceful" exit and avoid getting fired....just think of Richard Nixon. And yes, everyone says stupid things, but some statements are more stupid than other.....needless to say, I don't think that making disparaging comments about potential customers is a smart move for job security.

And this is why I love Cliff Bleszinski. Highly intelligent and tells it how it is. He doesn't BS like many people do in an interview.

And what exactly did he say that was intelligent?

I didn't think that was a particularly good piece, really.

Sorry, "always on" i wont buy.

Deal with it.

If Internet was as reliable and widespread as electricity without tons and tons of restrictions fine, I could understand his position more.. But thats simply not the case for alot of people. And I don't want a game collection that only works when someone keeps servers running .

TBH I don't give a fuck about some MS Employee talking shit on twitter. What I do mind is that stupid idea existing in developers and corporations heads. I am not glad that he got fired I simply don't care. I am glad his words caused a shitstorm atleast Sony, Nintendo and MS know now that people don't like the idea.

Life comes with consequences, it's the foundation that learning is built on. Adam, whoever this guy is, decent or not, certainly deserved to be separated from Microsoft; by his own doing or that of his superiors. His comments cost the company sales (you have to believe that there's people out there who decided not to purchase the next xbox specifically because of what he said and how he said it) and damaged an image that Microsoft has worked very hard to improve.
You can't insult and denigrate the buying public that supports both your job and the overall financial viability of the company you work for... unless you're talking about Wal-Mart. That place could open up a store at the bottom of Lake Erie and you'd see people tossing on swim trunks and scuba gear to save a few bucks.
Stupid and hopefully for him, a lesson learned.

"I’d rather live in a world where someone can slip up, say something that the world doesn’t agree with, and not have the collective internet lynch mob up their ass."

While personally I agree with Microsoft firing or forcing Adam Orth to resign,  I agree with many statements that Cliff makes in this and many of his other interviews.  People flip out on the internet because they can without any consequence.  One too many times do we see the internet explode, whine, and complain over nothing and Adam Orth is not the first instance.  Vgchartz alone has these things happen every single day.

The internet is a powerful tool but it can also be powerful in the wrong ways.  When people figured out they can give their opinions to complete strangers without the same consequences of real life is when we learned a lot of people's opinions are garbage in the first place.  People throw logic out the window and ignore studies just to whine.  Not saying this is the case for Adam Orth but it has happened in other situations.

I also don't agree with always online but I did not par take in raging on the internet and saying how this Adam Orth guy is that I don't even know is horrible person or is complete trash.  Just look at people's avatars and signature on this site making a meme out of this guy.  In reality he has an opinion just like me or you but the difference is his opinion turned into hell and is now all over the internet because he is more of public figure.  I'm sure you have said dumb things too yet you are not being made fun of constantly for it.  Cliff also mentioned something of that nature.

Adam Orth's comments while out of line the gamers comments has been just as out of line as him.  Everybody makes mistakes.
