Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo confident that Wii third party sales will change for the better

@fkusumot:

What the hell is that b*lls**t, some way to bash PS3 without getting the mods (SSj12) on your back? I can flame, too, you know?

- hey no cursing, that was actually a pretty decent joke/acronym thing.

- ssj12

@grandmaster: How was that flaming at all?? He didn't even mention PS3--he was making a joke about what Wii flamers would do, and that's all!

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

I mean to further expand on my point.

Microsoft's big company game is Halo... and that's about it right? The rest of the big exclusives are third party to my knowledge. (Bungie left but soft still owns Halo.)

Sony has Gran Turismo and God of War... and I think that's all for the "huge" games.

Nitnendo has, Mario Platformer, Mario Kart, Mario Party (or is that third party? like Sonic), Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Brothers, Metroid, and a number of other game games that are at or near the top of their niches... some of which are extremely popular.

There are plenty of sales to go around, but no company is going to come close to Nintendo when it comes to software profitability because they are the best of the best. They have too many elite franchises.

The points brought up by Nintendo are also valid... but I mean, what do you expect they are by far the best software company out there.

There is plenty of money to be made on the Wii and i'm sure plenty of 3rd parties will continue to cash in and gain even more money.

First take off Metroid, . If you are only counting "huge" games by Platiform owned IPs, Metroid doesn't have that status, especially after MP3. Otherwise you have to list a lot Sony's and Microsoft's IP developed games. Forza, Fable, Twisted Metal, Ratchet & Clank, SOCOM to name a very few...

"Mario" can literally be slapped with a franchise label. Anything with "Mario" in the title sells. Mario & Sonic is proof of that.

Its obvious that the 3rd parties will catch up to the curve of selling games on the Wii. The really question is what kind of games? At this point, unless you are a fan of the these games, the top sellers are mini games compilations and re-released games from other consoles. As a game player, that doesn't inspire me to rush to get the system or at least take the system seriously. Capcom is a culprit with RE4 and now announced Okami. Take Two released a Manhunt 2 (PS2 and PSP game) and now Bully rehashed. Meanwhile Zak & Wiki, No More Heroes, and to a lesser extent Metroid Prime didn't do so hot. SSBB is gearing up to be a monster hit but to what extent? To the casual outside gamer, its a love letter to Nintendo old characters. So Sega is going to play copy cat with Sega Superstar Tennis. Mario Kart? Its "Mario", of course it going to sell. Wii Fit? Its a bunch of mini game with another peripheral. No, Nintendo needs do some quality control with the games that are coming out and start pushing 3rd party developers to get innovative with games they are developing.

I'm just saying...

I dunno dawg. I dont think the Wii fanbase is the type to go out and buy anything that isnt fun on the Wii. Some will, nintendo fanboys will. Other than that, Wii Sports it is. Maybe SSBB will set a sales record and shut me up

It's the Kübler-Ross model taken from the book "On Death and Dying" published in the late 60's. It's now know as the five stages of grief but was originally applied to any catastrophic loss in a persons life. It's a widely accepted psychological model of the different stages that people go through when dealing with life-changing events that involve loss and the invevitability of the consequences.

I didn't mention anything other than "Wii Fit". Your response might indicative some cognitive dissociation going on.

This argument gets re-hashed almost weekly on VG Chartz, I'm sorry to say. It's the exact same argument every time, too: the anti-Nintendo sorts proclaim that the Wii's third-party support is going to stay the same or get worse, the pro-Nintendo sorts point out the parallels between the Wii and DS, and a whole lot of pointless insults are thrown about in the mix. I think this argument really needs to stop coming up. No progress is ever made on either side, and those who participate just end up walking away more assured in their own beliefs, and even more angry at the ones who don't believe the same way they do.

In the interest of seeing this thread not continue to derail into an ages-old argument, I'll just say that I'm not surprised at all by what's happened thus far, nor do I think the situation is going to remain this way for long. This is not a static industry, and anything that remains stagnant too long dies off. What that means exactly for the future of third-party games on the Wii I can't say without going into speculation, but it's not in developers' best interests to ignore a system with the kind of appeal it's showing.

I just don’t know how long third parties are willing to hold onto the hope that their game sales will pick up. There are some third parties with excellent Wii software that just doesn’t sell.

For every 'excellent' Wii third party effort out there, there are two crappy ports, two mini game collections, and five total p.o.s. games that don't belong on any system.  The only third party title I feel sorry for is Capcom's Zack and Wiki.  But they've seen some great success with both R.E. titles and will hopefully continue to develop solid games for the system.

Numbers are like people. Torture them enough and you can get them to say anything you want.
