if it werent for the huge backlash from people on twitter about what he said he probably wouldnt have lost his job. is what he did stupid? yes, because he should have known how people can react to the slightest thing. does he deserve to be fired over this (IMO)? no

Oh c'mon banana! He really did deserve what was coming to him. Even if there wasn't a huge backlash I still think he should have been fired. That's unacceptable behavior in so many ways... If you were running MS, would you have wanted to have a senior employee acting that way? I sure as hell wouldn't want someone like him on my company.

i would have warned him or suspended him for a week or so, but actually firing him? thats big. and if he has a family thats even bigger.

I don't think whether or not a man has a family or not should matter; if he's doing a really poor job it's time to fire his ass. I mean, it's always sad for the entire family when mom or dad gets fired - it's tough - but a company can't take that into consideration. That way, no one would ever get fired.

of course they should take that into consideration, when did we humans stoped feeling for each other? also if he was dooring a poor job, then yes fire him. but if he made one mistake while doing a good job? then no, dont fire him because one mistake. we dont know the reasons for him being fired, but if it was only for this incident then i say its way to harsh, if this is the straw that broke the camels back i would understand him being fired

Thing is, he could have broken some sort of NDP (or what ever it's called when you have a contract not to leak certain info), and that would warrant him getting fired.

if he was fired for leaking info i understand that, its harsh but it would be in his contract and he shouldnt have said anything, its not really that hard. but if he was fired because of how people reacted then that is too much.

You don't even need to leak info to break the NDA. I was threatened to be fired by my boss because I mentioned I was unhappy at Target on FB. I immediatly made my FB private. And I don't have an NDA with Target.

Also, no... business should never take into consideration someones family. That's just ridiculous. If two people are fighting for a promotion you should give one person it over the other because he has a family? How fucking absurd

Abloobloo what if he had a wife bloobloo and kids, I can hardly contain my tears due to his stupidity.

You should be aware of what you post on the internet when you willingly remove yourself from anonymity. You are essentially a spokesperson for the company you work for when you post on those social media sites as they're inherently pervasive, and you must be careful not to damage the reputation of the company. Might as well yell profanities into a megaphone at your friends while out in public and then complain that your privacy and freedom of speech are being impeded upon when you're fined.

Most likely constructive dismissal.

Let me get this straight.

A guy jokes with a buddy on twitter.

Fanboys go ape shit.

He explains it was in jest.

Fanboys continue to go ape shit.

He get's fired because fanboys went ape shit.

Fanboys will continue to go ape shit.

His life and the world would be a lot better if everyone would just ignore stupid fanboys and their stupid fanboy rants.

It's not that simple. You can't jsut joke with your buddy on twitter, when you have such an important job. A friend of mine who's a vet told me that her employer asked her to remove some pics she had on facebook where she seemed kind of drunk having fun, because future clients could look her up and lose confidence in her skills (as she if she has a shot of tequila every time she's about to operate on a dog). It may be unfortunate, but that's how it works in the real world. He should have known better.

Similarly, I heard that a cheerleader  (or whatever the girls who perform during breaks at superbowl) was fired for having a picture of facebook dressed up as black (nothing extreme) for haloween (at least that's how I recall the story).

Blame the "fanboys" all you want, but at some point you need to consider the possibility that he was being unprofessional.

And a general comment about people losing their jobs and how bad it is for their families. How about the people that never get a job? Don't they deserve a chance? Someone else will get his job who may also have a family or whatever.

Its things like this, coupled with voting EA for worst company, makes me detest the overall gaming internet community.

ZERO perspective on the big picture. Choosing EA when Bank of America rips off millions of families, and making this guy loose his career (and his ability to support his family) over twitter comments.

No sympathy for the guy really. He was trolling.

If people haven't learned that Twitter is a public forum then they are idiots and even if it was meant as some private trolling. If you don't want it to be a headline don't put it on Twitter.

If he did put that stuff on Twitter knowing it would get out into the public then he's purposely trolling the Xbox fans, which if there's a sackable offence at MS for public stupidity it would be to troll the people who are a revenue source. If he was trolling Sony or PS4 or Wii U he would have got a promotion. People gotta know you don't shit in your own nest.

If he was pushed, it had nothing to do with getting fanboys in a lather and everything to do with potentially costing MS some revenue.

Ya.....trolling should get a guy fired and his family essentially ruined. Good call on judgement.

This just shows that gaming execs cant say anything thats not an official press release, and the official statements will HAVE to be obscure, and worded precisely, because we have thousands of people with nothing better to do then dissect every word, travel to the far reaches of the internet, just to find something to rage about next.

LOL "his family is ruined"

That comment is ridiculous. Families have survived during harsh times for generations before him and will continue to survive during harsh times for generations after. There is also no guarantee that his family will fall on harsh times. He could have millions in the bank to live off of for all I know. His wife could make double his salary for all I know.

Those types of comments are just a logical fallacy called appealing to emotions.

Now he can enjoy being always on the unemployment line.

And on the government dole... and on the make fun list... and on the trending list of KnowYourMeme.com for an episode dedicated to him.

congratulations people because he told some guy to "deal with it" on twitter the guy lost his job, and his career is fucked up. im sure his family thinks this guy got what he deserves and is very happy with the situation. what a jerk...

Maybe he lands on his feet but having contempt for where people live, their internet access, and other things, is not a good sign.  And sorry me not having pity for him being a jerk.  I do not have the best of jobs, with a Masters degree, and sorry, there don't seem to be breaks for being nice.

wouldnt it be ironic if he couldnt afford paying for online, so he couldnt play on the next box, I'd be all DEAL WITH IT FUCKER!! LOL
