Forums - Gaming Discussion - Could the rumored 500 dollar Durango price tag be an indication of a stronger GPU in the Next Xbox

There is this rumor on NeoGaf that the latest dev units for developers came with a 7970 AMD card.  Most people speculated why MS would send dev units with a 3 + Tflop card when the next Xbox is rumored to have a 1.2 TFlop GPU.  With a 500 Dollar price tag rumored for the next Xbox, could it be that MS GPU might have a little more omph then current rumors have it speced if the nextbox retail at that price.

Hmm would line up with other rumors that have been circulating that the newest Xbox dev kits are far more powerful than the old ones

Still a 7970 seems WAY too powerful and expensive for a console. Would be absolutely epic though

7970 would also provide heating issues, coming off the RROD issues it would either sound like a Jet Engine, or would end up having more of the issues of the past.... It's ariound 250W instead of around 130W of the 7850.

It's significantly more powerful however.

There has been rumors that the next Xbox will have dual gpu's, (mobile crossfire). One main gpu and a smaller embedded gpu. Other words, apu plus separate gpu. Used in notebooks now, which could explain the $500.

If the 720 is 500 dollars i think eople wont buy it for a few years.
And cost dont mean it will be powerfull.ms might be greedy.

I know its nice to think that MS would be gready but instead, I would think its smarter to believe that MS would know the right price for the features of its console in a very competitive market.  Its not like MS will be launching their nextbox with no competition and its not like MS does not know that Sony isn't the only competition they have in this market.  Lauching at 500 is pretty risky even if the Nextbox has a GPU closer to the 7970.  The sweet spot for a console prices has always been 299.

It just seems that with a 500 price tag, Kinect 2.0 will not justify something that expensive and the console must come with a host of hardware and software features to make people pony up that kind of money.

I think MS can pretty much sell their console for any price in the US (N.America)... relatively speaking.

Maybe $500 or even $600. As for the rest of the world....

There's another rumor about Durango having two APUs: http://www.gamechup.com/xbox-720-beta-kit-contains-two-apus/

I don't think the PS4 and 720 will be priced too far apart. No doubt they'll both be $450-$500

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

dont forget kinect 2 will also be bundled.
