Forums - General Discussion - Are we all sick in the head?

I am unable to sleep once again tonight.  My mind is just eating me away and I can't stop thinking.  So with that said i thought maybe we could get an interesting topic to talk about ( or at least I find it interesting).

It is said that we are unable to live in the moment because we have a fear of being judged, a fear of our past, and a fear of our future. Is this really true?

"Our mind is possessing us, and that we are all sick, that we all have a disease of "thinking" all the time. We're never in the moment, always past or future."

~ Eckart Tolle

Is this true? I mean i know our mind is the biggest obstacle and that  I can manipulate my mind into making myself believe anything>  I can manipulate myself into being angry, sad, or even scared if I try at it.  However are we all actually sick because we think so much?

Thank you for responding haha  I was begininning to think nobody here cared but me lol

Yeah i see that same problem a lot.  Everyday peope tend to  be so focused on how there future is going to turn out.  When they arent thinking about the future they talk about how bad or how good there past is as if the present never even existed. Does the present even exist or is it all past iand future for most people.

For the most people its only past and future. Thats how i realise when i look at thepeople in my workorat home. Most of them dont realise that the present is the real and important thing.

I have the same problem like you. Sometimes i also cant sleep because my head will not stop thinking. But gladly that only sometimes happen.

come to Aus people here live day to day lol

Well i know why i cant sleep.  Not anything to do with past or future though.  well kind of i guess, idk.  I just wanted to have something to preoccupy me since every normal person is asleep by this time that i talk to haha

I'd love to visit Austrailia XD Someone sent me a video recently about how Austrailians talk differently than us and how you all shorten your words a lot like lippy and the teli XD  I love it haha

Well I think a lot about my future but I don't think that's a bad thing.

I believe that happyness comes from reaching a goal you set yourself

The feeling I get when I reach something is uncomparable.

Thinking about the past because you try to reflect it and learning from it, for me is great. Its like a long long way to a goal, but every milestone I make, makes me a happy person.

A question, why do you have this "fear"?
It does come from somewhere, you may not have realised just yet

I had that kind of fear in moments of my life where I thought: "this is not the place I want to be at"

Sounds like you have a small amount of anxiety.

That's probably true, but I think this bears the danger of expecting happyness to come from a few short-lived moments in time. As long as you haven't reached the goal, you won't be satisfied because you expect the satisfaction to come from a future event. And as soon as you've reached the goal, that source of joy is nothing but a memory of the past, and the memory will rather make you sad because you'll wish to repeat the feeling.

I think that's why it's the eastern wisdom of "the path is the reward" bears a lot of truth. It's nice to reach goals, but to maximize joy/happiness it's much more important to enjoy the path that you take, because that's where you'll spend 99% of the time.
