Dominion
Wikinger (Vikings)
Die Säulen der Erde (The Pillars of the Earth, theme based on Ken Follett's book)

are 4 of our favorites of recent years.

Die Säulen der Erde was a huge hit in Germany, but especially the brilliant, fast-paced card game Dominion became the new Settlers/Carcassone over here. It became a smash hit and an instant classic after receiving all three German Game of the Year awards in 2009. More than 1 million copies of Dominion had been sold worldwide already in 2010. Unlike most other hit games (e.g. 5 of the 7 games mentioned in this post), Dominion was not created by a German game designer but by Donald X. Vaccarino from New York (and the fact that the man got a German wikipedia entry but not an English one tells you something about popularity of board games in specific countries).

I also always wanted to play Agricola, Caylus or Puerto Rico as well, but these critically acclaimed games are too complex (or sessions take too long) to be played in the family.

You every play Pillars with the expansion?  It is really good.  I find it a must add for the variety.  And Dominion is really good, but found out there is a big diminishing return with each expansion added, and adding more cards makes the game.  For me, I had to get rid of the game, because the cards got to be too heavy (have had back issues).

For Caylus and Puerto Rico, I recommending checking out brettspielwelt.de online, because they are online.

So, anyone want to organize an online game night?  Could go on brettspielwelt.de or elsewhere.

The problem I have with games that don't require electricity is it requires you to have actual friends.

Well, some people do have friends, or you can go to club meetings and find people to play.  I am able to meet people at Meetup meetings and play, and they aren't quite friends.

You can also try solitaire boardgames.  For example, I created a solitaire trick-taking cardgame.  Rules to it can  be found here:

And there are numbers of others also, with even theme.  Look up Agricola and others in that harvest series, on Boardgame Geek:

Other games in the harvest series include: At the Gates of Loyang, Le Havre, and Ora and Labora.

Agricola can be thought of as the boardgame version of Harvest Moon.

Ideal also is to put the videogame industry on notice there ARE other options for boardgaming besides consoles and other electronic platforms.  Well, at least in my dire wish it would be an on notice thing.
