Forums - Gaming Discussion - Torment: Tides of Numenera sets new Kickstarter record with over $3.99 million.

Update: The final Torment: Tides of Numenera tally has come in and it's ended at $4,188,927.

This does not include any outside donations via PayPal, so it could in fact be more, but the Kickstarter total alone has smashed Project Eternity's previous cumulative total.

To commemorate this occasion inExile has shared the first glimpse of the male player character of Torment: Tides of Numenera, as can be seen below.

Original story:

Torment: Tides of Numenera has set the record for the game that's raised the most money on Kickstarter. The previous record was held by Project Eternity, which grossed $3,986,929. As of writing this, Torment: Tides of Numenera has achieved a total of $3,990,012 with five hours to go.

However, Project Eternity had $176K in PayPal donations, too, making its grand total $4,127,028. We're sure Tides of Numenera has also received a fair deal through PayPal, but an exact figure hasn't been announced. Presumably Torment developer inXile entertainment will release a full tally once the campaign ends at 1:00 a.m. 6th April GMT.

While Torment: Tides of Numenera is likely to raise more than Project Eternity overall, the highest funded crowdsourced game is still Star Citizen, which raised $6,224,123 between Kickstarter and its own site, Roberts Space Industries.

We'll update as the Torment: Tides of Numenera Kickstarter comes to a close later this evening.

You know they gotta take a couple of bucks outta that and go to Red Lobster or something...

This is what happens when you excite gamers about something and have the know how, name recognition and talent to be able to pull something off of this level. Definitely wishing inXile good luck with this one and looking forward to seeing Wasteland 2 in what is, hopefully, the near future.

That's how it's done, Mr. Garriott.

If Sony can make them release Wasteland and this for PS4, I will be very happy.

Brilliant, exactly what Torment deserves.

I believe that "convince" or "moneyhat" would be a better term here.  LOL at the thought that Sony is in the position to "make" an independent company do anything.

Plus, and you should know that I have financially backed both this and Grim Dawn, this game will not be designed to be a MODERN mass market game.  This is a REAL RPG (not Final Fantasy, Diablo, Zelda or any of those*).  If Planescape:  Torment is anything to go by,  there will be actual role playing involved, voluminous choices that matter right down to almost every encounter, and swift consequences for each decison - not the pathetic 2 or 3 endings  (only one of them "good") that most "RPG's" have today.  Unfortunately, much as inXile did with Wasteland, with all of the branching dialogue, there will be text only for most of it (not voice acting).  I fear that this will turn off many mass market "hardcore gamers" who have come to expect the full multimedia experience.  Think about how much people complain about Zelda not having voices, and then imagine how much more text there will be to read in Numenera.  Wasteland and Numenera will be niche games (as they should be).  I don't know if inXile will find much profit in porting it to PS4 or Nextbox (though with the system architecture being so similar to PC, who knows").

I have to admit, I would be ecstatic if there was full voice acting in the game, but I just don't see it happening.

*  I've enjoyed all of those series, so this is not a slam... but they are NOT RPG's.  They are action or adventure games with fantasy elements and the occaisional RPG trope thrown in so that they can claim to be RPG's (except Zelda which never really does).

I am so glad that my name is going to be appearing on this game and on Wasteland as well....
