The console is sitting at 30 million right now, and the number can only go up. It is available in a wide variety of colours too, which is nice. 

There are direct competitors coming like Nvidia Project Shield - if you want to count that atrocity as a handheld of course - and the back then called "true next gen portable" () PS Vita is the closest thing you can have to a dreamcast sales wise. Being it the only direct competitor and I don't see any other platform coming on the handheld market that is going to pull off such numbers as 3DS, and good looking colours, I think it is the right time to separate the winner from everyone else.

The underdog, less powerful, with less impressive tech demos, with the lesser features, with no unreal engine support, is the king. Deal with it or deal with it.

I think it is deserved.

I'd  like to hear specially the opinion of the Vita aficionados back when it was the NGP NEXT GEN PORTABLE. If there is someone left from those times...

Yes, and deservedly so. It's a great gaming platform.

It would be premature to judge the the Next Gen Portable until after its first generation.

Yeah, with a gap of ~25Mil in just a bit more than 2 years and the best selling games yet to come I'd argue this handheld Gen is basically won by Nintendo. Like the one before it. And before it. And before it. And before it.

Well..its is cheap, user-friendly; it has an excellent library of games and many others are coming; it engages social gaming with all its StreetPass, off-line and on-line features...no wonder why it sells a lot. We all agree that right now it´s the most successfull handheld of THIS generation. Period.

Yeah but Nintendo really has to see that the 3DS won because of SOFTWARE.

Not the 3D. If anything this might give them more justification to add something else to the next one. Do not want to see that happen. Dual screens is awesome. 3D? not so much. What next?

OP: It is the most successful handheld console of this generation, but then again it doesn't have much competition right now. Altough the 3DS does deserve it sales, its a good gaming device (clunky) but good nevertheless

I still think the 3DS is going to lose it's appeal in its later years but it will sell a lot by then. Vita is on the verge of selling a lot more as soon as a price cut hits the west but overtaking 3DS sales is a feat. Unless the PS4 sells boat loads like PS2 the Vita won't top it.

Of course. What's a Vita? Does it have Luigi's Mansion? No? Ok then.
