Forums - Microsoft Discussion - More Details on Always-Online Xbox Revealed

Adding to the pile of the next Xbox's always-online rumors, anonymous sources state that the next-gen console will suspend games or applications if not connected to the internet.

Speaking to Kotaku, an unspecified source stated, "If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time -- currently three minutes, if I remember correctly -- the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started."

Other sources indicated that this requirement may change over time, while others are said to have no knowledge about a constant internet connection for the console.

SimCity's disastrous launch by way of an always-online requirement served as a compelling argument against this implementation for consoles, but Microsoft appears adamant about a constant connection.

IGN learned recently that the next Xbox will apparently require all games to be installedbefore use. Do these prohibitive measures make you wary about the new hardware? Let us know in the comments below.

Well if true, that sucks and i really dont like it much, and like it less and less as i hear it over and over again and no rebuttal.

"That said, a caution and a caveat: other sources familiar with the codenamed Durango console have told us that they are still unaware of any Microsoft plans regarding an online requirement. No one has been able to say it's not true and some have speculated that this is required at the operating system level and therefore isn't something Microsoft has to tell all developers or retail partners. Microsoft also has the ability to change this type of requirement seemingly at a moment's notice through changes in firmware or networking infrastructure."

I'm not sure why kotaku even post this news if they know nothing, more hits?

At this point I think there really is too much smoke for there to be no fire.

edit: from the article: Our main sources for this story have a perfect track record in getting these kinds of things right.

Welcome to next gen.

Edit: Comment wasn't supposed to be taken seriously lol

In this kind of industry, if a rumor keeps popping up, time and time again and isnt disproved then it's most likely true, it sounds completely shit, and im not sure Microsoft are that oblivious to their consumers wants, i wonder what they are gaining from an always connected console?

As an extreme Xbox fan since the early days of the original, if any of these rumours are remotely true, I can say with conviction that they won't be getting a dime from me. These anti-consumer behaviours the industry is gravitating toward disgust me.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

even as somebody with low probability of picking up this console, I sincerely hope that it isn't true

Uh-oh.

GameStop's latest comments convinced me that these rumors can't be true.
