Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony exclusives that went multiplat have largely failed

Is this truth>?

yes 168 42.21%

maybe 58 14.57%

no 172 43.22%

Total:398

Tekken
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=tekken&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
Tekken 5 did 3.87 exclusively
Tekken 6 did 3.68 on ps360

Crash Bandicoot
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=crash+bandicoot&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
Crash Bandicoot 3 did 7.13
Crash Bandicoot Wrath of cortex did 7.24 on ps2xboxcube, and is now a dead franchise.

Kingdom Hearts
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=kingdom+hearts&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
Kingdom Hearts 2 did 4.07
No other multiplat (which all the rest are) even come within a million of that.

Persona 4
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=persona+&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
Persona 4 did .82 on ps2
Persona Arena did .48 on ps360 (I know the game is very different, but surely exclusivity would sell an additional 9k copies...which is what 360 sold)

Katamari
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=katamari&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
Beautiful Katamari is the lowest selling console katamari at .28m
But the ps3 version is only .31m so not a huge loss.

Final Fantasy
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=final+fantasy&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
FF12 did 5.95 on ps2 (and likely missing sales)
FF13 did 6.89 on ps360 and is outsold by 7,8, and 10
FF13 360 is even outsold by ff13-2 on ps3

Metal Gear SOlid
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=metal+gear&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
MGS4 did 5.75 on ps3
Rising did 1.06 on ps360

Grand Theft Auto
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=grand+theft+auto&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
GTA San Andreas did 20.81 on ps2
The next title, gta4 did 19.85 on ps360

Devil May Cry
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=devil+may+cry&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
DMC3 did 4.3m on ps2
DMC4 did 2.75 on ps360
And DMC reboot did .67 on ps360
Dead.

Tomb Raider
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=tomb+raider&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
So much data
Tomb Raider: the last revelation for ps is the last exclusive TR: 2.48
Fast forward, TR is at 1.51 and Underworld did 2.16
Mind you, TR is the best game in the whole series. It should be doing uncharted numbers.

Almost every game that has gone multiplat from playstation exclusive has decreased in sales, specifically, this happens when titles are announced multiplat before release. Sales tend to break in half, for a variety of reasons.

Once you factor in development costs, these games have likely done a lot worse as multiplats than they did as exclusives.

There is one argument you could give, as in, these games would likely just be halved in sales if they were exclusive. But how could that happen for nearly every single exclusive turned multiplat? It happens to virtually every game.

Like:
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=dead+or+alive&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200
Dead or alive 3 (xbox only):1.77m
Dead or alive 4 (360 only): .44m
Dead or alive 5 (ps360): .43m (see how they split?)

Anyone have any more data to share?

I think GTA4 sold over 24 million copies if you count the Episodes From Liberty City retail version.

90k, not 9k (according to VGC).

Awesome comparison of MGS4 and MGR. ¬¬

I don't know. It depends. Dark Souls sold more than Demon's Souls, combined, so going multiplatform didn't hurt at all. Mass Effect is the same case, they sold much more units by going multiplatform.

The Kingdom Hearts comparison is kinda unfair because it is comparing handheld to home console

I dont really like KH on handhelds as much but it's still kinda unfair

and the Persona example is to be expected because Persona Arena is a fighting game instead of an RPG

I get what you are saying though

Math is not my strong suit.

Yes, but 2.08 compared to 1.68 is not a huge amount when you figure that the ps3 version of dark souls should have been way higher than 1.45 based on the game being much better.

Mass Effect was not announced multiplat at release.

Some games, yes. Some games, no.

It could also be fighting games just aren't as big as they use to be in terms of market sales. Would Tekken sell that many copies if it was PS3 only? Same for Dead or Alive..

But yeah a lot of titles won't worth going multi. I don't think I would cry if I couldn't get some of those titles on the 360 but that's just me.

You also have to factor in install base. PS3 levels vs PS2 levels.

It's just that simple.

the GTA one is a bit of a stretch...there basically even

Nice conspiracy theory but I don't buy it the PS2 was a lot more dominant then the PS3 and the 360 plus the previous games you mentioned where a lot better that's why they sold more. Also Dead or Alive 4 is is very under track it was over a million before it got adjusted down to the current ridiculously low number.
