So... what exactly IS the problem with Iwata and Nintendo? This is a really vague topic and it looks you just want something to complain about...

1: Iwata really tries to get content at and after launch. They paid for Rayman (which failed recently) Lego and Monster Hunter (published to be released in Europe) exclusivity. Pikmin and Deus Ex are coming soon. Wii U has had the second most successful console-launches after Wii. Wii U is only selling bad NOW because Rayman was delayed at the last moment and not many more games are coming, although the console sells significantly more with the release of Monster Hunter and Lego. Also keep in mind Nintendo will ALWAYS have difficulty getting third party multiplatform support. Even with third party support they won't make money at all (Gamecube).

@ UncleScrooge
I don't understand your first paragraph at all... What's the problem lol.

What is the definition of a 'modern' company? Name me one console/handheld that has good virtual console support at launch... PS3/PS4 aren't even backward compatible and Vita hasn't that many PS1 games available. At least not so much virtual console as on WiiWare. I don't even bother to begin about Microsoft.

So any other companies has fast servers? PS Store is TERRIBLY SLOW right now with a boring background made by a 8-year old... Windows 8 is a joke, Origin destroys gaming overall (not able to play offline games at launch?). I've to pay for Xbox Live to play online... and pay to pay for DLC and indie games?

Iwata made the DS and Wii a huge success. We'll see what happens with Wii U. 3DS is already doing very good and with Monster Hunter 4 exclusivity (because of Iwata) and Pokemon releasing this year... it will drop the biggest bomb in Japan since Fukushima.

Good response.

I'll add, Nintendo last teneration with Wii and DS alone was more successful than any other company in the industry has ever been. I don't see any reason to turn him into some sort of sacrificial lamb and believe that suddenly Nintendo will become super successful like with the Wii and DS - that is just foolishness. The fact is, Iwata is the best CEO in the industry, and he should stay put.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

a) Nintendo consoles dont sell because Nintendo games steal third party game momentum

b)-> Nintendo decides to ignore first party titles 3DS doesnt sell at all

c) -> Nintendo tries a hybrid thing and just releases the simple NSMBU game and lets the third party handle the rest WiiU doesnt sell.

I dont really see what else he can do.
The main problem is third parties come up with crap software or bad ports etc. And alot of Nintendo players dont care about those. They got burned 100000x and now third party needs to regain the trust of the userbase but third party is to lazy. They dont understand that you need short term loss to gain long term profit. They became lazy and used to easy money (DLC etc...)

I dont like mainstream games at all I always buy exclusives and niche titles no matter what system. If I play Batman or GTA its on my PC and not on a console just look at the GTA4 or Skyrim modding community! awesome!

Tbh I am happy with Nintendo because I dont mind if "crap" like Fifa or COD or any other mainstream title for that matter comes to the system because I am not buying those anyways  not for PS3 360 Vita 3DS or WiiU.
I buy games like  "3d dot game heroes" and  "Rune Factory" and "Little Kings Story" or exclusives  like "Okami" "Yakuza"  "Alan Wake (before it came to PC...)" etc.  and as said before when a game comes to the PC aswell I always get that version because it simply IS superior in terms of lasting appeal and possibilities.

I never ever bought DLC in my life because I dont want a gaming industry that makes mainstream games and adds DLC.  I will never ever play multiplayer games with publisher/dev  hosted servers DEDICATED is the way to go!   etc.

I am a "nostalgic?" gamer I hate quick time events and stuff like in Bayonetta that destroys the immersion just to tell you   "YOU GOT GRAD F/ Bronce Medal whatever.  BECAUSE YOU DARED TO LOOK AT OUR WONDERFUL SCENERY  NEXT TIME RUSH THROUGH THE GAME DAMMIT!!!!!"    I hate all this crap.

Just came in here to say... this is what I'm talking about when it comes to great discussion. Yeah! Go gamrConnect!

I've been a pretty big fan of NotEnoughShaders, and while I don't agree with everything the article states (although I do agree that after the 3DS launch issue, the Wii U launch issue is quite concerning), it's nice to see a well thought out and researched piece of video game news. ^_^

I'm gonna post even though I didn't read everyone's comment, I just wanted to give an opinion about corporations & business decisions. I may be wrong in this, but it's my bias opinion based on my own conclusions.

Creators/inventors/engineers/etc. are incredibly important to corporations that manufacture products. It is vital that board be not so quick to be rid of them without having others who will take their place & have some type of creative plan to innovate their products. If you leave the decision making to business oriented individuals, then you can forget about new ideas because I don't see any of them gambling their jobs, but instead keep producing what seems most financially profitable for the company.

Okay, just wanted to say that.

Bring Howard Lincoln out of retirement and put him in charge of everything.

Complaints about Iwata baffle me.

The Wii U and 3DS are perhaps even more brilliance. Not as groundbreaking as before, but both systems have the forsight to battle a more difficult market. The 3DS offers affordable gaming and the 3D is not a feature which is replicated on phones. Wii U offers a touchscreen which can enable the porting of iOS and Android type games which are loved by the mass market. They may not be as successful as their predecessors, but they are perhaps even more creative in battling a tougher market.

Just an FYI glasses-free 3D on smartphones has been in the market since 2011 but failed to rise even the slightest interest in the west.

Consequencially Nintendo should have not banked on it selling 3DS.

I think what Iwata did with the blue ocean strategy and disturpting the market with DS/Wii was brilliant.

However I'm at a complete loss with 3DS/WiiU which do nothing to follow that same line of thinking and are largely retreats away from everything DS/Wii accomplished.

Despite what Nintendo fans here preach 3DS is only selling well in Japan, it's sales in Europe and NA are not impressive (Vita is pathetic) even though they took a loss on cutting the price and even with major franchises - Mario Kart 7, Super Mario Land, NSMB2. Iwata must be held responsible.
Yes, WiiU launched well but the complete loss of momentum come January speaks HUGE volumes. Yes games will help it sell, but the concept of WiiU is simply not appealing in and of itself and again it's selling at a loss. Iwata is ultimately responsible for this too.

I'm left with the impression that Apple/Android distrupted the market on the casual side to an extent Nintendo doesn't know how to respond and Nintendo can't compete on the core side (nor does it want to - it's a money losing strategy) and so they've played it overly safe and will be left with predominately their core base because of it, but people who buy Nintendo systems for Mario/Zelda/Metroid/etc buy little else it seems so it's not appealing to other developers.

This guy gets it. Spot on.

To be honest, Wii U sales in Europe were bad from day 1, and Wii U's first December in North America also showed troubling red flags (Dec 12 NPD was lower than the first December for the $500/$600 PS3 and lower than the GameCube's 1st December too). It had a solid launch week in North America and an OK start in Japan, but that's about it.
