Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4: Sony went for “cheaper hardware” for fear of smaller install base – Cousins

IMO, they should have gone with even cheaper hardware. Much cheaper.

Sony is going to launch a console with a possible price of 500 Euro in it's biggest market Europe; which will be having a depressed economy for the next 5/10 year.
The mainstream accepted price for a console is around 300 euro. Living in Europe myself, i would say it's even around 250 Euro at this moment. Money is in short supply here.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Actually the logic here makes sense. The PSX and PS2 showed that the brand was expanding and had no limit. Sony went with expensive tech for the PS3 because they had no reason to believe that it wouldn't sell even better than the PS2. After the Wii ate their lunch and the PS3 split second place with the Xbox 360 Sony now has no reason to believe they can easily gain the market back. They don't want another console that will be difficult to make their money back on. Going with less expensive hardware and focusing on software support is the smart move and is probably what MS will do too.

Makes sense, but if its true it will likely disappoint a few here.

What are your doubts, exactly? It seems like you don't know that the specs have been announced.

Sony might have been the first company to acknowledge and adjust to the changing landscape. Whole focus on the hardcore audience has been the strategy for the past few years now. Nintendo attempted another casual push with their tablet controller, and it failed. If the entire dedicated market is shrinking, nintendo won't be able to compete against PS4/720 on any level. Still don't know what microsoft has to offer, but if it's too casual they might be positioning themselves poorly.

But yeah, the industry is completely changing. It wouldn't be surprising to see any of the big three eventually bow out of the dedicated market. Too much money to be made off smartphones and tablets. It could actually be the best business decision any of these companies make, considering the cost and slow death spiral of the dedicated hardware market. Vita is dead, 3DS is just...there, and Wiiu has failed already. Bad times all around.

PlayStation*Mobile and WindowsMobile are the future. Nintendo needs to get it's software on mobile devices and stop wasting time losing.

You seem to be delusional.

Even though his jobs is to promote his game over consoles, I agree with "that this time around console install bases will be smaller. And probably will be focused more on that core audience. It’s certainly not going to be kids and casual gamers buying consoles any more I don’t think, they’re going to be all on mobile.”"

This gen is going to be way smaller than the previous gen, and probably by a big margin...
