The 16-bit era was a great time, whichever system you had. It's really retarded that a lot of people have magically forgotten how good + popular the Genesis/Mega Drive was, and act like only Nintendo/Square games were worth anything. Both are equally great in their own way.

It wasn't like today where one port was consistently "better" than the other system's. Since both systems were so different, the "ports" were usually different games (MK series, Aladdin, TMNT, Tiny Toons, Contra, CastleVania) with the "better" version usually debateable.

Even exclusives -- SEGA had its own stellar lineup of arcade games + RPGs, Nintendo had 1st party + Square. And the SEGA CD overall sucked, but it also had a couple of the best games of the generation.

I think the Genesis outsold the SNES in America, didn't it? Either way the race was very very close.

The SNES has this aura of OMG now, while the Genesis legacy lay forgotten, aside from "Sonic was kinda fun".

No, the SNES outsold the Genesis.

I do agree with you that it was a great time for "system wars". I don't think the difference between ports of games was ever so crucial as it was back then. :)

Genesis is a great system. This reminds that I still need to beat Aladdin. I think it takes less than 1 hour to go all the way through, and I've probably played it for more than 4 hours total, but I keep on getting game overs before I am able to finish.

Was the point of this thread to get us to vote for the Genesis games? No offense, but since none of the games in the database has a reasonable rating, I don't really feel like taking my time to vote for any game. I kind of just ignore that whole part of the site.

Systems owned: Nintendo 64, GameCube, Xbox 360, Atari 7800, Genesis, PlayStation, Dreamcast, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS.

Year-end predictions (April 6, 2008):

  • DS: 94 million (96.0)
  • Wii: 46 million (44.4)
  • PSP: 45 million (43.6)
  • X360: 27 million (27.3)
  • PS3: 24 million (19.4)
  • PS2: 124 million (123.7)

That's the exact same reason why I don't bother rating any games.  Why spend time voting for games when there are asses voting 1s for games simply based on what system the games were released on.

Oops double post... :(

The Genesis, by far, is SEGA's greatest console. Though I have never had one, I have played it extensively, especially Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Streets of Rage 2. I have to say though, the SNES has a superior library. However, would anyone doubt that the 16-bit era is gaming's Golden Age? No other generation can match those games.

The SNES was just where it was at in the 16-bit generation. Sonic was great, and I played plenty of it at my friend's house (and I now have the Mega Collection -- thanks Sega!), but the SNES had tons of great exclusives and better versions of multiplatform games.

The SNES was definitely a better piece of hardware (it should be, it wasn't released until 2 years after the Megadrive) but that didn't change the fact that Nintendo kids would get atomic wedgies from the Sega kids in the playground. Nintendo was (and probably still is) considered the geeks choice, while Sega was considered cool. That changed a bit when Street Fighter 2 was released exclusively on the SNES. Sega kids had to stop beating on the Nintendo kids so they would be allowed round their house to play SF2 (the beatings started again when a version of SF2 finally came out on the Megadrive).

Maybe in your neighborhood.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

For some reason I didn't get the sega3 when it was $30 years ago an i've been holding off buying one from a merchant for a while now. I should just get it next month and get it over with.

Too bad so many rate Sonic the Hedgehog games highly. I find them incredibly poor overall and boring. When you can beat multiple levels of a game with your eyes closed by holding forward and jumping, you know something's wrong.

Anyway, Sonic's popularity takes away from the real awesome games on Genesis, of which there are a lot. Why play a crappy action game like Sonic when you can play Castlevania: Bloodlines, Revenge of Shinobi, Ghouls 'N Ghosts and other sweet action games? Genesis also boasts great strategy (Herzog Zwei, King's Bounty, Shining Force) games and beat-em-ups (Golden Axe, Streets of Rage) of note.

To sum up, there's a good reason Genesis is my third-favorite system of all time (and extremely close to second-favorite SNES).
