This is a terrible article.

First off, they talk as if it's completely IMPOSSIBLE to appeal to both the hardcore and casual demographics. Microsoft sucessfully appealed to both demographics with the 360/Kinect. They did it, no matter how you spin it. The author also bashes all motion controls calling them gimmicks, and doesn't appear to even like local multiplayer??? (He also said "on a motion free next gen console" bullshit) He also bashes microtransactions, even though big publishers like EA are embracing them, so does that make them casual too?

Microsoft is all about casuals now, they cared for the hardcore but that changed once Kinect came along.

You know now what MS with NextBox is about? Interesting. I recently read about PSeye, sharing features, next PS more social, aiming for the central device of the living room... sounds somehow not so hardcore...

Sony has been aiming for the center of the living room before Microsoft came. The difference between Sony and Microsoft is actually quite simple to understand. They dont let the first and second party games get overshadowed by the functionality of the console.

Who was first is irrelevant. But thanks for posting your opinion, we will see how it will turn out for gamers.

I am a hardcore gamer and I agree with the article. As the being of infinitely superior taste I am, I deserve to have the entire videogame industry focused exclusively in making games I enjoy. Casual gamers are fickle, meanwhile hardcore gamers always support quality titles, so that way there will be no room for failures without a reason.

In fact, I think we should go one step further: Why games only? The entire media and entertainment industry should make only the products I like.

Only classical music should be made. No more rap, R&B or pop music. It doesn't matter if it is britpop, J-pop, K-pop, or if the singer is Icelandic, Canadian, Austrian or were born under the sea.

No more anime, cartoons or other programmes for kids. Instead of that, documentaries about the lifes of the greatest scientists ever like Niels Bohr or Lev Davidovich Landáu should be made and aired 24/7.

No more manga and comics as well. Those products are laughably inferior in comparison with any book written by Poe, Dickens or Faulkner, to name a few.

* Before trying to revoke any of these points, prove that you aren't a casual gamer by naming all the characters in the bottom pic in the OP, their games and what do they have in common.

Wow!

You are so disrespectful of others it's not even funny. You go into every thread and constantly 'thank' people for their opinions, it's disgusting to see.

You need to realize that most comments here are opinions and people are intelligent enough to know this. If you can't handle opinions that are different than yours, then just say nothing and stop bothering everyone with your sarcastic and fake thank yous.

This is a forum and the MAIN REASON people come here is to express their opinions. Do us all a favor and try to understand that.

What a condescending article.

"Leaving Sony as the sole console developer to tend to hardcore gamers now."

If Sony wants them, Sony can have them. From my experience self-described hardcore gamers are immature, parochial, and elitist.

Pft! This large swathe of people I'm judging are not good enough to identify with the likes of me! They're so elitist!

No irony at all there :x

I'm not seeing the irony here...

He's judging people by his actions, unlike those self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamers that judge others by their gaming preferences.

And I agree with him. I have yet to see any gamer that refers to himself as "hardcore" having respect for what are called "casual" games or those who played them. In fact, I would say that the sole reason the term exists is just for the opposite. To perpetuate the idea that some types of games are inherently superior than others, and that those who enjoy them are either ignorant or have poor taste. And of course, I would also call this immature behaviour...

These ambiguous labels say nothing about the quality of the game in question, nor are always representative of the gamer's experience. I for one have been playing videogames for around 18 years now and I prefer to play Mario Party or Tetris than Uncharted or Counter-Strike. What am I, "hardcore" or "casual" ?

In addition, these terms represent a false dichotomy. There's not just two types of games/gamers, but many, many more. Just because a "hardcore" gamer likes 2D fighters doesn't mean that he likes FPS games as well, and the same applies to "casual" ones. So, what's the point of using these terms anyway ?

As others have mentioned, any content distributor that wants to attract a big number of customers has to appeal to a variety of tastes, which in this case includes both "hardcore" and "casual" games, whatever those are. Sony knows this very well, which is why they have published plenty of games that could be labeled "casual" every gen. The success of both PS1 and PS2 had a lot to do with this. You don't get to sell over 100 million consoles with only the likes of Final Fantasy, Tekken, and Metal Gear Solid. You also need your fair share of Harry Potter, Madden, and Guitar Hero.

I deem this post adequate for someone of my status. Just barely though.

I do understand this but some people don't differentiate between facts and opinion. There are ways to express opinions with words and ways to show facts (posting links or comments, for example). I don't care what you think about me but I won't change my behavior.

Your last comment says enough about you not understanding the point being made here.

A shame really, but it's not like i expected anything else.

As a hardcore gamer I'm having a AMAZING gamer life with PS3... fun and enjoyable hardcore games...

So I agree with OP and now we need PS4 to dominate eveywhere.

PS. PS3 will end the fisrt and bigger winner of this generation.

Its funny you say that, because Microsoft has proven that gamers way of thinking really doesn't matter. Three E3's in a row...count em.
